I am looking to upgrade into something in the 25-27 range, who build the best boat for the money in that range. preferably a deep v, possibly even a deck boat. Also want to be able to run in the mid 60's easily. What motor package should I look at? (496, ho, 525)

There are some great boats in the SPAM section right now.
I know from personal experience that Shockwave makes a great boat and they are not as expensive as some of the other high end custom boats.

my bro has a true 27 foot. It's a 1999 HALLETT 270 step, closed bow, 502 w/whipple, XR drive. tops out around 75-77. cruises at 40 around 3200-3400 rpm's get 1.9 mpg when we were on lake powell. fully loaded for overnight outings or anything else.
It's in the spam or email him at jlborba@yahoo.com

I think you would be hard pressed to beat that boat for the $$.
Sounds like he wants it gone and it's a great buy for a big 25' boat with lots of goodies. :)

I would look at Eliminators or Ultras. Both build great boats. It's up to you as to what you want/need out of a boat.

If their 29' is out of your range, you might want to stick w/ a 496 and/or HO. A 25' SW w/525 will put you right at a 29' with an HO. Check out Hystrung's and River918, both are nice newer boats that could save you some $$

I have a SW 29 and had the 25 prior to this one. The 25 is very roomy and with a 496HO you will be right at 70. There are some nice late model SW 25's here on the board that should meet your needs at a very good price right now.
I know from personal experience that the SW is a very durable and well put together boat.
If you need any further information send me out a PM.

What's your budget??? I'm biased because I'm on my 2nd Shockwave - but I think their 25 is a great all around boat for the money, and like a few others have mentioned there are a few low hour 25's for sale in the spam section at good prices.
If your budget will let you get into a 29, take a look at CDOG's boat.

A cat is a much better riding boat. Anybody that says different doesn't know the differences and/or has never riden with a expierenced driver.
I think you can get a deep v to ride decent if you drive it right. (day break and dusk) j/k. A cat is a smoother safer high speed boat. A 65 mph cat is worthless. It won't even begin to work and use the air under it like it could at 70-80. Buy a cat with nothing smaller then a 525. A deep v is a great place to start boating. Haul your friends family and drunks around. You will have a blast. Shockwaves are good boats in thier class... You can't go wrong with thier 25 for a first time boat, but I would really look hard at the used market right now. The market is slow and sales are down. If you know a boat builder as a friend and can get a great deal then go new, but otherwise used is the ticket today. Go to the river and ask some of these board members to take you for rides. Try in the morning before the group starts drinking and driving. DILLIGAF is a great boater to be around and will be more then happy to take you for a boat ride. He has a very nice looking 29' Shockwaveaftershockcarrera. Have him take you out before he starts drinking... things get ugly with him quick  . Get others in cats to take you for a ride. See what fits YOUR needs on space, ride, driving and speed. Oh and don't let your wife pick a boat just because of looks, buy it because you like driving it and it FITS YOUR/HER NEEDS!
Look at deck boats also, don't just think 25' V or 25 Cat. Look at Ultras new 26', very nice with lots of space. Look at Eliminator Deck boats, they are real nice. A friend of mine has a Eliminator Deck and loves it, runs Parker every other weekend with it.
If this is your first custom boat do a lot of looking and more reading. Look at them all, even if it is more then you want to spend, just look to get ideas and see what you like. Then get a loan and buy a boat. You do the right homework (like asking questions here) and you will feel confident in your purchase when the time comes.
Oh and don't believe everything you read here, some of they guys are still at the launch ramp..........

V vs Cat is a neverending debate. It depends on your needs and budget. I have a V. I rode in a Cat and love the ride on Saturday Havasu. But that's only one day a week and usually on bigger weekends when it's real bad. My boat handles well but the cats the chop isn't even noticeable. In the Ocean though I would think a V would be safer but I could be wrong. I also have a little one and plan to have another so having a V keeps them inside the boat and not walking easily off a deckboat. Also budget. Insurance on V's is much much cheaper than on Cats. Just a couple things to think about. You have to decide what's best for you. If you want to give a little more background as to your needs and budget and such you can get some better suggestions but the final decision is yours.
With that being said If you you want a great family boat with great workmanship, the best looks and even better customer service take a look at Ultra. Of course there are a few awesome manufacturers, a bunch of good ones and even some bad ones out there. So look at it all. Just end up with Ultra. :D

shockwave must build a pretty nice boat or they must have a lot of you guys on the payroll. Reason I say this is because majority of the responses were in shockwave favor.
Before purchasing my 21 jet. I looked at several other great builders. I settled on Shockwave because they incorporated all the nice rigging and great workmanship that the others did. However, the other builders wanted 10-15k more for the same size. Granted, the other builders had more modern style hulls, but I was more concerned about quality and price.
Some other "custom" boats in the same price range as mine were not built with the level of quality as a Shockwave.
So, the reason you are getting a lot of responses directing you to the Shockwave is the comment you made refrencing the best boat for the money.
If the Shockwave is out of your price range, don't even look at most of the other high end custom boats unless you go used.

These responses are really amazing to me there are a lot Shockwave Cheerleaders here. Go over to Off Shore Only and ask this question and they wont even know what a shockwave is over there. I dont think there is anything wrong with Shockwave and if you like it and it gets you and your family to the lake great. However, Nobody even mentions boats like Donzi, Sunsation etc. Hell you can buy an older (2000, 2001, 2002) 29 Scarab with twin small blocks for less than 60K. I would look at Howard, Hallett, Lavey Craft. There are tons of boats on the market dont just limit yourself to the small Southern Cali MFG's. There are some beautiful boats for sale here but go ride in a Donzi or a Hallett or a Powerquest or a Howard Bullett or a Sunsation and make up your mind from there.

I'll put a Dana up on the list. We drive our boat in ALL conditions. Big water to glass, Ocean to River. Dollar for Dollar you just get more with a Dana. Check my sigline for more information.
There are a TON of boat builders out there. Most of them build a great boat, the callenge is finding a boat which feels good to YOU. Test drive them all, if the builder asks for a "deposit" ask them to forget it. Most important thing of all.......... enjoy!

Nice addition you made to my list. But sorry, Commander is one boat you will never see me recommending to anybody. No offense ment to any Commander owners. It's just not a boat I'd ever own.

I think that right here would clarify that statement

Yeah, what he said !!! :)
I have not taken mine in the ocean yet, but I have heard from many Shockwave owners that it will do more than just fine. Most West Coast boat buyers are't looking for a big ocean boat, just something to play around the lakes on.

I'm watching this thread very carefully because I'm probably gonna be in the market this winter for a new boat as well. Shockwave was one of a handfull of boats built by the west coast guys that I liked so this is good to hear. I'm wondering though if there is anyone here who can give some insight on what a person can expect in the way of service/warranty coverage should a problem come up. Since I'm on the east coast its not like I can really drive down to my local Shockwave dealer. This was why up to this point I've only considered custom boats who have dealers in my area (i.e. Hustler Powerboats)
Great thread guys. Please keep the info coming. :)

They do a lot of cheap boats each year, people on the boards sometimes get a better deal to come on here and say nice things........it's what makes the world go around....... it's working right now.
Disagree Andy. While some may get better deals than others usually it is because they are repeat customers. Cheap? No Andy

If I was looking for a boat in that size range, I'd look at the following builders.
In no particular order.
Lavey Craft
Ultra
Shockwave
Cobra
Hallett
Howard
Eliminator
I think all of these bulders build excellent boats and have good reputations.
I just happen to have my 2750 Lavey for sale(still)

I am looking to upgrade into something in the 25-27 range, who build the best boat for the money in that range. preferably a deep v, possibly even a deck boat. Also want to be able to run in the mid 60's easily. What motor package should I look at? (496, ho, 525)
I don't think anyone has mentioned Genesis. I have the 247 which I absolutly love. They have a 25 and a 29. PM me if you have specific questions. They have been great and I have have had my boat for 2 years. Also, they are coming out with a 26 cat by the LA boat Show.

There is a boat to fit everyone. Your job as a consumer is to do the homework yourself, learn about how they are build, and learn ths from the manufacturer because some people are not honest about other builders. Go to each builder, even if you think they may be out of your price range and see what they have. These guys on here are mostly cheerleaders and trashtalkers. You don't get good reviews that way.
Do your homework, and don't make a desicion based on what is said on these boards.

Ok, BOATAHOLIC; let's get some things narrowed down.
What $ range are you interested in - or - what is the cap on what you want to spend?
What year is the OLDEST year you would want.
Open or closed bow; or deckboat only?
Unless you want to pay a grip in insurance each year, the sport-cat thing would be tossed. Deckboats are not the same, so they would still be in the running.
What's the minimum top speed you will be happy with?
Any of this info should get some pretty obtainable products for you to see.
