PRESS RELEASE
Donzi Wins 2006 Offshore Racing World Championship
38 ZR Race Boat Clinches 2006 P1 Powerboat / UIM World Championship with Dramatic Finish in Portuguese Grand Prix of the Sea
For Immediate Release
Sarasota, FL October 2006 The 2006 Powerboat P1 offshore season roared to a finish in front of some 80,000 spectators in Cascais, Portugal on October 1, and when the spray had settled, a Donzi 38 ZR race boat had claimed the world championship. The 2006 season included fourteen open ocean endurance races in the Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea, and Atlantic Ocean, with stops in Valetta, Malta; Anzio, Italy; Travemunde, Germany; Gallipoli, Italy; and Cowes, England before culminating in the two-day World Championship series in Portugal.
The Naples, Italy-based “OSG Donzi” team of owner/throttleman Giancarlo Cangiano and driver Stefano Cola edged out the second-place “Trident Kiton” built by Metamarine of Italy, and the third-place Fabio Buzzi-built “Kerakoll”, also of Italy, to clinch the Evolution class world title.
Upon winning the championship, Giancarlo Cangiano stated, "We are very happy to be world champions, happy for our team and friends, happy for Donzi, happy for my yacht club in Naples and happy for my beautiful wife.” Stefano Cola added, “It has been an enjoyable season and we knew that this year we would be competitive. I was always optimistic that we would win."
Many of the P1 races took place in heavy seas with large ocean swells, and race courses featured numerous challenging hairpin turns. “We’re incredibly pleased to have won a world championship against an international field of competitors at races that are genuine offshore events,” said Josh Stickles, Donzi’s VP of Marketing, who added, ”True performance is much more than a measure of speed while going around an oval track on a calm river or lake. Our boats were designed to provide superior balance and rough-water ride, and for pinpoint handling and turning. This world championship title is true validation that nothing beats a Donzi when it comes to running in real-world conditions.”
This is the latest success for DonziÂ’s twin-canopy 38 ZR, which has racked up six APBA National Championships and 3 APBA/UIM World Championships in the United States. However, this was its first championship amongst such a diverse and exotic field of competitors, from an aluminum-hulled ocean racer powered by twin 800 HP Lamborghini V12 engines to a Fabio Buzzi-built fiberglass boat with twin 930 HP Isotta Fraschini turbo diesels.
Said Stickles, “We are truly impressed by the professionalism of P1, its presentation, sportsmanship and the efforts it makes to create a public-friendly show. We are pleased to be here in Portugal to celebrate this achievement with our friends at OSG Donzi and are happy and proud to have them as part of the Donzi family."
The Union Internationale Motonautique (U.I.M.) will present the P1 World Championship trophy to the OSG Donzi team during a special ceremony to be held in OSGÂ’s hometown of Naples, Italy in January 2007.
