This UC Davis link is a must read for anyone with gophers:
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7433.html
The Macabe traps are good if you follow the directions to the "T", and chain/to a stake them.
Bait is the best program. Cats are the ONLY other solution, and they take a lot of time.
My neighborhood has to be the Gopher capital of the world.
I kill probably 3 or 4 a month, the cat another 3 or 4 per week, the kids claim the cat kills much more.

The main burrow is about 12 inches from the visible holes.
Take a full size shovel and dig a full shovel size divot about 9 inches deep revealing the main burrow.
Their should be two burrow holes in each side of where you dug.
Put a hand full of lettuce in each borrow hole, then a tablespoon of Grants gopher bait from Lowes, on top the lettuce.
Cover the hole, not letting any dirt in the burrows where you left the lettuce and bait.
Works 90%+ of the time.
If you see more gopher holes, then keep trying.
It's the best way.
You'll get the hang of it.

Much in the same fashion as the Crockodile Hunter..I pursue the gopher! put a`snare around his den opening and wait ..he'll poke his head up sure as shit..wait till his body comes out and whammo..what you do with him after that is up to your imagination :D Very easy to catch there abou as smart as bench racers! :rollside:

Gunga gunga ga-lunga. (in my best Bill Murray voice)
We used to smoke them out years ago. I dont know if they sell the little pots anymore. Used to light them and roll them down the holes. Problem with this is they get on the run same as with water so a good shovel will then be needed or a #3 wood  :boxed:
Water is messy and the little f'ers can swim.

Now this is something I know about, I have/had a huge gopher problem. Lost count of all the plant I've lost to them. Tried it all smoke, water posion. Take a trip to Lowe's and buy some gopher trap's as soon you spot a fresh mound place the trap inside as per the directions. You'll catch um. Though once a gopher is caught any near by gopher will take over there tunnals so it never ending. Something to look forward to each spring!!!

We have always used water and keep the hole full . He'll either come out and you can club his ass or he'll just drown . Either way he's dead .

Once you catch them, bury them in the tunnel. They hate eating their relatives.

:D :D :D
Fawkers jacked my new sod up in no time. I spared one in a moment of weakness - but no more mr niceguy. Gophers and the cute little Kangaroo Rats are gonna see some hell rain down on them this weekend.
Getting the Kangaroo rats is fun - they just kind of hop along (not like the speed of sound ghetto rats).
If it's in my backyard - then it's considered an "endangered species" if you know whadda I mean.

Cover the hole, not letting any dirt in the burrows where you left the lettuce and bait.
Good post TPC.. This works pretty well. Ramona has to be the other gopher capitol..
My buddy swears by this technique. The only thing I want to add is to cover he hole with plywood and then cover it with dirt. You want to make sure to cover it well, as any source of light will cause the gopher to discontinue using that tunnel... Oh, and make sure to clear the tunnel after your dig and before laing the plywood down...
You can also dig 2 holes about 3 feet apart slide traps between the two holes and use the same covering technique.. Makes it easy to recover your trap since they sometimes pull them town the tunnel..
Finding the tunnels is fairly easy. pierce the soil with a shovel. goes in really easy, tunnel. more resistance, no tunel..

I had a HUGE gopher problem when I bought the pad two years ago.. my solution to end the infestation was to buy the in-ground traps from Home Depot/Lowes etc., and tie string to the trap about 18" long. Tie the other end to a nail and stick it into the ground so the creeps wont pull them into the hole (and you lose 7 bucks).
Bait the trigger plates with peanut butter.. install them into the holes and cover them up.. something about PB attracts rodents, and they usually get nebbed right away. Stick the body back into the hole (with some dog poo, if you need to clean the yard) and it'll keep the newbies away for a while. They will re-infest old tunnels, so if you can keep them away it'll make it easier to keep the grass green.
