No Dave that is not a stupid question, stock rock grates are atached with 1'2 long 1/4" screws. Once you put a pump intake loader on there is extream presures put on the the screws, so it is mandated that you through drill your intake and up-grade to 5/16" blots.

Why black oxide? Was more the question I was asking.. I understand the purpose of through bolting.

That is a standard that NJBA has been using with great success. So we adopted it. But the Stainless hardware is much more brittle also than the Grade 8 Black Oxide bolt.

Got that backwards there Jimbo.. Grade 8 is much more "brittle" then stainless.. Much higher yield rates though.. Being that the bolts aren't being side loaded with any kind of "shock values" I doubt the brittleness would ever come into play..
Just one corrodes, and one doesn't. I would think that both would be more then adequate for the job. Hence the reason why I asked, why would they pick the corrosive of the two?

What's up RD. Hope all is well with you. :)
I'm getting ready to bolt that monster to my transom and have been thinking about bolts. Since you brought up the information, I have a couple questions for you.
What are the yield rates for 1/2 inch Stainless VS Grade 8?
What about side loads and "shock values" ?
