I'm making some things for the yard, and I want the raw steel to get rusty for the vintage old rusty crusty look.
What can I do to speed up the rusting process? Not much moisture here, so waiting for it to rust on it's own might take a while.
I was thinking a dip in pool acid might help the process, but there must be other ways.

Individual pieces can be burried in old flower garden or mulch prep area and kept moist....about a week

Spritz the metal with muratic acid (follow safety precautions) rinse off the acid and put the metal in salty water. 55 gal. drum, cheapie kiddie pool etc.
If you want a really rough look, put the piece in a bonfire then the salt water trick.
Anything rougher than that, ship it to me and I will run my D-8 over it a few times.
Be good, Jim

Piss on it.
Thats exactly what I was thinking. Hey Phebus, set it in the back yard and when ever you gotta go, go on it. It'll be rusty in no time. :supp: :D :D
Put a Datsun emblem on it, then sit back and watch it rust:hammerhea
You are old school..... Datsun.. Ain't heard that in a long time...:hammerhea

Found this also.
I use muriatic acid (available in the pool maintainance dept at Home Depot etc) in a spray bottle and bleach in another spray bottle.
Process: Spray the item with a mist of acid and dry with a propane plumbers torch. WARNING-the fumes created by this are very noxious! Wear a respirator mask! While drying with the torch spray with a mist of bleach. Instant rust!
