 I know you love the US stuff, but ya gotta admit, those other guys build some great stuff....vectored thrust, full canards, serious power to weight stuff, the thing is flying backwards....show me something in the US arsenal that does this.....I don't think we come close to one of these.....in a dogfight against this plane....hmmmmmm

I'm not Jbb but if you want thrust vectoring, how about the F22?
As for canards... I love canard designs. They have some wonderful design advantages at low speeds. ... but do you really want your supersonic wing flying in the wake of a canard?

I am pretty sure the F22 would kill the Mig-29 long before a dogfight occured and before the Mig even knew the 22 was in the neighborhood. If a dogfight did happen for some reason I believe the 22 also is capable of some pretty crazy sh!t.

I live a few miles from where it's built, and I have a lot of friends who work on it.....and from what I have read,.....and seen on daily test flights.....The F-22,in my opinion, will kick ass on anything out there.......Our pilots are better trained as well...
Raptor.....

Agree, the F-22 is one bad mother. JBB, the F-35 is supposed to make its first flight this morning at 9:00 Texas time.

The Swedes made a very good, and (for it's day) very maneuverable supersonic jet fighter about 3 decades ago, the Saab 37 Viggen. Delta wing with foreward canards. Mach 2.
http://www.globalaircraft.org/planes/saab_37_viggen.pl
Apparently it was followed by another successful canard design, the Saab 39 Gripen, a current front-line aircraft.
Also Mach 2 miltirole fighter, 50,000 ft/16,000+ meter cieling.

When it comes down tho to turning and burning, it is very difficult, even with thrust vestoring, for the large fighters like the MiG 29, Sukhoi 27, F-15, F-22, to manage to turn with the nimble little F-16. Very few fighters are rated to pull a sustained 9G load on the airframe, let alone a 13G snap-load, the F-16 is. The venerable F-15 Eagle ("not a pound for air to ground"), 7G's.
I am finding info online that puts the F-35 at a 7.5G max airframe.
That G-load capability rules maximum lateral acceleration (direction change) rate.
The best maneuvering 16's tho, were the A's and B 's. They slowed the leading edge flaps down in later versions, which extended actuator life somewhat, but slowed maneuver slightly. There's trade-off's everywhere.
I would like to see some direct head to head comparisons myself, would be interesting to an old crew-chief like myself.

Well, thats just it, that why thrust vectoring is the next gen for aircraft.....SUPPOSEDLY, a thrust vectored plane will kill a non vectored palne nearly every time, due to the incredible turn ratios...as for the 22, not sure how it will do yet, we'll have to wait and see...as for now, there is this wicked baby being redied for developmement by the USSR.....

A 22 pilot might find his hands full with this baby...best to shoot it down from 75 miles away, huh???

Thats impressive, but it is no Raptor, the Raptor can actually be (not saying that it is) slower and less maneuverable and that Mig still will loose, why, cause of the Raptors stealth technology. We have the best shit.

Most of the flight portion of the video was filmed out here where I work (Edwards) I will say dog fights are very few and far between nowadays. Tatics play a large part in air to air combat today and the victor in most cases goes to the aircraft that lines you up in their sights first, hence the need for stealth. If the first you know of me is when your ECM warning goes off you are most likely going to have a bad day.

First flight of the F-35 is going to be today. The pilot is in and getting ready.

False alarm. Is only a high speed taxi test.

Cool that the Russian plane was Red/White/Blue.
