According to the weather service SoCal can expect some heavy weather this weekend. Warnings of "potential" heavy rainfall, high surf/tides, costal flooding, mountain snow down as low as 2000' ft. on Saturday, thunder storms, high winds, and a general drenching..........Remember to pull those drain plugs out of your boats, "bow" the covers up, and "baten down the hatches" around the house............MP

And 20 minutes of team coverage for every news channel across the southland with video of a flooded intersection in a neighborhood where nobody can afford TV and the close up shot of a storm drain.

Don't forget the ever so popular "storm watch" personal interviews of passers by on what they think of the rain.

It's going to be brutal here Tom. I'm heading to home depot in the am to buy them out of tarps. I'm sure I can sell them on the street corner for a premium.
It's pretty chilly here too. Down to about 45ºF, burrr. :D

Am I the only one that saw the warnings scrool across the bottom of the screen during the evening session of the weather chanel? Or am I the only one gullible enough to believe them? They were refering to a "possible" weather event where certain conditions were lined up to come ashore and IF these conditions do in fact get together, as the computer models show they will, we're in for it. And they weren't refering to a 1/4 inch of rain, they were looking at a major weather event that could/would deal So Cal a real winter weather type storm. None of the networks have mentioned it, but the national weather service doesn't hipe this type of stuff, so I kinda lean towards at least being prepared...........MP

Everyone who posted the "STORMWATCH" slam is right on the money. You would think for the second largest media market in the U.S., we'd have decent local TV news. NOPE! All crap and glam. Oh, and heaven forbid it drizzle, or the idiot reporter up the I-5 will stand on the side of the road waiting for the blizzard that never comes, and the other clown with the umbrella videos a fallen tree.
For once, I hope the rain is Biblical in nature, so it'll make the first wasted 25 minutes of every news hour worthwhile..

I have no idea. I was only relating what the little ticker deal at the bottom of the screen said. As with most weather forecasts, the words "potential", "computer models", and other "what ifs", played a large role in the "warnings"................But no, I didn't quote any movie script........MP

Here is the latest from the San Bernardino mountains:
First Major Winter Storm This Weekend
By RIMOFTHEWORLD.net
Thursday, December 14, 2006
A cold Pacific storm that developed over the Aleutian Islands of Alaska will begin to affect our weather as soon as late Friday afternoon. The moisture in the atmosphere will rapidly increase with coastal fog and drizzle developing Friday evening. A few showers will likely develop later Friday evening into Saturday, with snow levels above 6,500 to 7,000 feet.
On Saturday, the main frontal band of precipitation will move toward Southern California. Snow levels will start out above 6,500 feet, but rapidly lower late Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening to between 3,500 and 4,500 feet. Heavy rain will pound the lower west and south facing slopes with the strong likelihood of rock, mud, and debris slides — especially in the recently burned areas. Flooding is possible along small creeks and roadways. 1 to 3 inches of rain are possible in the foothills and along lower coastal slopes. 6 to 12 inches of snow will be possible at resort levels, with 4 to 8 inches possible about 6,000 feet, and lesser amounts down to 4500 feet.
By Saturday evening, thunderstorms will become possible with snow falling as low as 3,500 feet. Driving conditions will rapidly deteriorate. Rain at the lowest coastal slopes will be quite heavy with the possibility of flash flooding. Hail and gusty winds could affect all areas. Periods of snow — heavy at times — will fall above 4,000 feet, and locally down to 3,000 feet, overnight. An additional 6 to 12 inches of snow will be possible.
On Sunday, periods of snow bring additional snow to the mountains. Some thunderstorms may occur in the cold instable air producing local whiteout conditions and brief heavy accumulations. The snow level will remain quite low, around 4,000 feet. Hail and heavy rains could fall in thunderstorms below 4,000 feet, and the snow level could locally lower to near 3,000 feet. An additional 4 to 8 inches of snow is possible, with locally higher amounts in thunderstorms.
Snow showers will likely linger into Monday, but the heaviest snow will be over. The snow level will also gradually rise to near 5,000 feet. Monday will be partly to mostly cloudy and breezy. Temperatures below 6,000 feet should go above freezing in unshaded areas allowing some improvement in driving conditions. However, freezing temperatures are likely overnight causing refreezing of road surfaces. 2 to 4 inches of additional snow is possible in favorable areas through Monday.
Total snow accumulations will average from 24 to 30 inches at resort levels above 7,000 feet, to 12 to 18 inches near 5,000 feet, and 4 to 8 inches down to 4,000 feet. Rainfall totals will range from 2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts. Skies should clear after Tuesday with breezy cool afternoons and cold nights. Melting and refreezing of snow and ice will continue to be a problem for motorists through the week.
This is a developing storm system and the forecast is subject to change. Residents and visitors should keep abreast of the latest forecasts and road conditions. Winter weather can quickly turn deadly for unprepared travelers.
