That shot of the finish line is pretty strong. Did you go, Tob? The pictures and motorcycles were great. Those guys did a great job for him. RJ gave Mark a nice smack!

We used to have a Hopetown MX race here in Simi Valley. (Named after Bob Hope)
The Euros came over and showed us what MX really was.
The Euros brutally kicked our asses here and every other race in the US too.
We were a sorry bunch of riders.
Then Marty Moats and Marty Smith came on the MX scene and not only beat the Euros here, but Internationally too.
Every race,, all the time.
The Euros hated us just as much then as they do now.
The Martys raised the standards and stakes and we've beat them ever since.

We had make plans with family to be out of town before all of this, so we didnt get a chance to be there. Wifey really wanted to be there. She worked with Marty for years over @ NoFear. Heard from many that the Simos did a great job pulling everything together, and the gathering at LaCosta afterwards was really nice. Apx 750 people to show their support. What is the RJ slapping Simo thing about?

Bruce Brown did a cool old school documentary on Hopetown (and Ascot).
Well worth the rental if you find it.
Glad to hear that it was cool yesterday, seems he deserved it.

I took some excellent pics of him at Carlsbad in 1979 or 1980.
I think he was the first American to win that year.
Roger Decoster (sp?) in the same race.

Mark did a nice talk about Moates, and threw in a little something for RJ about Marty's slaps being better than any alarm clock.... So they pull up RJ, and on his way up he smacks Mark pretty good. Told him a little bit of Moates was still "channeling" inside of him... Pretty funny. Some of those stories were full on Moates. Whole lotta riders there, that's for sure. They brought his original LOP bike from Carlsbad, plus a new YZ... Pics everywhere. The guys did a great job, I'm sure a lot of people are thanking Mark and Brian today.

Watched him at Carlsbad many a times........great memories.
.
There was a period of time he worked for the Carlsbad Police patroling off-road areas. Everyone rode out there all the time(I grew up in those fields) but it was still not "legal", per say. A friend of mine was being chased by him not knowing it was a pro rider vs.the usual street cop we'd normally have outrun..............Marty pulled up next to him and kicked him over.:D
