100% cpu usage

I am getting burned out on trying to figure out why my pc jumps to 100% cpu usage and turns into a dog. It seems certain websites do it and it doesn't really matter whether I am using IE7 or Firefox. I can't watch video on any of the pages like break.com or You Tube because it is embedded in the page and just becomes totally choppy. I am running a Sony laptop 3.2 Ghz with 512 mb of RAM. I wasn't like this before, but now I want to throw this thing through the dam window when it acts up.
Any suggestions?

Oh... and you might want to flip open Task Manager, sort on the CPU column, and see if you can spot the barking dog. It's possitble for malware to hide itself from the Task Manager but it's worth looking at.

I use SystemMechanic, it was recommended by a couple of forensic guys. I am using a 4 yr old computer with heavy use - it keeps it nice and clean. Let's you defrag the memory, recover memory, tweak memory settings, cleans the crap out of it.
You might try blowing some air thru your computer - a bunch of dust will do weird phucking things to it, like slow it down.

Yes. Windows defender and AVG run daily. Sometime I run Ad-aware or spybot to double check. I when I get really frustrated I'll run the trendmicro online to check for spyware, grayware and malware.
It's usually pretty clean except for maybe some cookies. :)

Task manager is pretty much always open on the task bar and when it starts acting up I maximize it to check it out. I have it sorted by cpu usage so what ever is taking the most is on top. Generally it is one of the browsers (firefox or IE) but it could be a number of other programs also. Sometimes outlook.exe hogs it, sometimes it's svchost.exe, one time the damn print spooler took it all up and lagged the system.
Right now system idle process is any where from 96 to 98%...great...but I could open another window or try to watch a video and bam...back to 100%. :mad:

So now it is playing a video that was on google just fine that I couldn't play earlier tonight. The cpu hung around 28%. I just played to goats in a tree link on Yahoo's homepage right now and I got half way through it before I reached 100% which is further than I got before.

Phat Matt, at what part of the task manager are you looking? At the processes under the cpu column or at the bottom under cpu usage?
In the column mine shows system idle 95->99, but at the bottom under usage it shows 2->6 %. I'm just asking to learn something cuz I don't know what it all means. JFYI the only processes running on this machine are system idle and task mgr. I have no problem running anything however lately if I open any video on yahoo it seems that it takes forever to close when I click it. Everything was defragged and cleaned up just last night and made no diff in performance.

On the bottom it shows the total cpu usage at that time of all programs running. If you click the processes tab and then sort it by cpu by clicking that column you will see what process is taking up most of the cpu. If you are show "system idle process" at the top of the list most of the time you are good. If your systems start running slow and you want to see what is happening you can check that out.

1. Go to task manager see whats killing your processes. Google it and see if its spyware and if so how to remove it.
2. Run hijack this
3. Update your Anti spyware with latest patch. Try several at boot
4. Update your virus scan dat run scan
5. Start - run -msconfig (services tab) (startup tab)

Right now my usage is between 1 and 9 % as I type this out. Too bad it didn't stay like that. I could open up another tab to browse and it will sky rocket depending on what is on the page. Embedded video is the worst.

I am getting burned out on trying to figure out why my pc jumps to 100% cpu usage and turns into a dog. It seems certain websites do it and it doesn't really matter whether I am using IE7 or Firefox. I can't watch video on any of the pages like break.com or You Tube because it is embedded in the page and just becomes totally choppy. I am running a Sony laptop 3.2 Ghz with 512 mb of RAM. I wasn't like this before, but now I want to throw this thing through the dam window when it acts up.
Any suggestions?
i have the same problem, and i dont know shait about what to do ...so.... i just restore my labtop to the previous date (when it was fine)...i am wireless with no security so my shait is always friggin messing up...and cingular sucks for wireless :confused:

First thing you should do is to go ahead and throw it through the window, any window, just make sure you throw that crappy PC away!
Second, go to the Apple Store and buy yourself a Mac, problem solved and no more problems ever!
Seriously though, I switched to a mac 2 years ago and have NEVER had a single problem. I do not understand why people keep buying pcs. I guess it is because they are use to the initials "PC" and are affraid to change. Macs are so much easier to use than a pc and they are MUCH more reliable! Just my .02

I would think your system mechanic would clean out your Prefetch folder but just in case it didn't...go to your Windows folder and that is where it is listed. Delete everything in your Prefetch folder. Don't worry you won't miss it (don't delete the folder) Then restart your computer.

Are you receiving auto updates from MS? I know they've been throwing out a lot after their release of IE7......maybe do a re-install of it. I've seen my pewter act strange for a few days until another uodate came in....same with McAfee - sometimes a bad one goes out (at least on my end).
I also wonder if you updated to IE7 and had to reinstall Java, or one of your media players is trying to jack all your default settings. Real tries that a lot, Quicktime is worse IME. Maybe make sure you have onlt one defualt player for each type of media.
I freakin hate updating any media player, and then end up seeing TIF files in Real or Quicktime....

Don't mean to jack your thread Matt but I have a question. Since updating my Internet Explorer my cookies folder has disappeared. I used to go in daily to selectively remove the cookies I didn't want but can't find the folder??

I use a mac when I DJ. Mac's are cool.
My PC is just easier to use on the network here at work and I have used them forever.

I noticed that you seem to be having the problem when you're watching videos on YouTube (flash) and the behavior you mentioned sounds a little like the flash plugin acting up.
Have you tried reinstalling it or updating to the latest version (if you don't already have it)?

I had a similar problem after I d/l some printer software. When I would press chtrl alt delete, I would go to processes and there was one that freed up my CPU usage, it was "spool.svc", I deleted that process and the whole thing worked fine again. I deleted that printer software, re d/l it and it was fixed.

I think you may be right. I have suspected something to do with flash because it depends on what websites I am on when it really acts up. I am pretty sure I have the latest version but maybe I will uninstall it and see what happens.

A long time. I don't think it has anything to do with the printer. The spooler has only sucked up the resources once. It's running great right now. It really depends on the website I am on. That is when I have most of the problems.

OK, the newer version is web based and I have ssen cause issues. Sometimes problems like this are hard to pin down. Sounds like you got it though.
