Another desert tragedy: Searchers find body of man missing 4 days

The body of a Lake Havasu City man missing in the desert for four days was found by searchers late Tuesday afternoon.
Mohave County Sheriff's Search and Rescue teams from Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City and Kingman had been scouring the Craggy Wash area since the man's disappearance. The search had since expanded and refocused on the area where the man was found.
As the December sun began to sink Tuesday afternoon, searchers found the all-terrain vehicle of Robert Chase, 48, at the bottom of a large hill. Shortly afterward, searchers found Chase's body at the bottom of the hill, authorities said.
The cause of his death remains under investigation.
Sgt. Mike Friend, who heads up the Search and Rescue teams for Mohave County Sheriff's Office, said it was a fluke the area was being searched.
“This is an area not normally used by ATV riders,” Friend said. “I just happened to see that the cable normally across this dirt trail was down so we started looking and saw all the ATV tracks.”
Chase reportedly left home at about 7 a.m. on Saturday to go off-road riding on his three-wheel vehicle.
Failing to return at 8 p.m., Search and Rescue units with Lake Havasu City Police began looking in the area of Craggy Wash, about one-half mile north of the Lake Havasu City Municipal Airport.
With no sign of Chase, the search Sunday was extended to the desert northeast of the city, off Bison Boulevard.
“The missing man's roommate was the reporting party and he didn't have a definitive area of where Chase was riding his ATV. So without a specific area, we decided to open up the search to a wider area,” said Sheriff's spokesperson Trish Carter.
That wider search was extended Monday north to the Interstate 40 and State Route 95 interchange, including the area of Havasu Heights, and south to the Bill Williams River.
“Basically, we wanted to look at any area where a person can ride off-road,” Carter said.
His body was found about three miles east of the highway.
In addition to Lake Havasu City Police, MCSO Search and Rescue units were joined in the search by Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Rangers.
