I'll be looking for a replacement Chevy truck soon.
Looking for a 2004-2007 with long bed, crew cab, 2WD, and gas engine. I'd like it to be a 3500 (not a dually), but a 2500HD would probably do.
What combinations were available in these years? The only 3500 trucks I see seem to be duallies. I do not want a dually and want the biggest engine possible. I've heard something about an 8.1 engine, but I'm not sure if that's gas or diesel.
I haven't gotten a printed copy of the Auto Trader yet and the online version is a pain in the ass to sort to these requirements. What's out there?

All 3500's were duellys those years.
The 8.1 AKA 496 cu in is gas and no longer available with the new style.
It comes with the Allison trans.

I just got a 2007 c-3500 , Single Rear Wheel, 4x4, Crew Cab, Duramax - Allison, Long Bed three weeks ago.
I replaced a Ford f-350 and with the exception of less room in the cab, I think that this is a better truck!
I put about 1,000 - 1,500 miles per week on vehicles, so I'll get back to you on reliability, but so far everything is okay.

Incorrect. DUAL (DUALLY) rear wheels has always just been an option, not standard.
Standard 3500 is single rear wheel.

BTW... It isn't what you are looking for, but I am putting my truck up for sale here shortly. 2002 crewcab short box. Four-link rear suspension, air bags all around with the Edge Attitiude and Juicebox, 22" rims and automatic bed cover. It is perfect for everything except what I need it to do right now and that is be a pure work truck. With everyone needing to drive the shop truck, I can't take a chance on this truck getting beaten by my guys, so I am moving it. All of the logos and graphics will be removed for sale.

why not go diesel?

Wizard29
12-27-2006, 08:13 PM
I'd rather not get a diesel because from what I've observed, diesel prices are generally higher than gas. Obviously there are exceptions to that, but I seem to see diesel higher than gas most of the time. Diesel also isn't available at all of the places I go.
Just never been much of a diesel fan, really...

Classic or new style?Sorry to jump in here, but it has to be a classic -- Duramax in new style won't be available until after March 2007 (and no 2500 or 3500 new styles are available yet.) :)

Got the truck out the door for $33k. Sticker was $46,000, without the bedliner, nerf bars, ranch hand grille guard and bed caps that I added.
Hauled a gross wt. of 14,000 lbs yesterday and I'm liking the truck better every day!

Gas near me is 2.65 for regular and 3.17 diesel. 8.1 you will be lucky to get 12 towing on the frwy. My duramax get 17 mpg towing on the frwy.
If they both have 22 gal tanks. Gas will be 58.30 to fill the tank and you will go 264 miles on that tank. Diesel will be 69.74 to fill the tank and you will go 374 miles.
You will need an extra 110 miles to get where the diesel is, which will cost you an extra 23.85 to get the 9 gallons you need.
Total trip. Gas - 82.15
Diesel - 69.74
Difference of 12.41
More power, longer life and I see no savings in gas. Most 8.1 I know only get about 8-9 mpg.
I will stick with my Duramax.

2500s, 3500s, with new 660 ft lb DMax, should be on the lot(s) late Feb. Per my last discussion with local GMC dealership VPres.

i agree, i think diesel is the only way to go when you're towing/hauling a lot, they're awesome for power and efficiency

I have always been for gasoline, but things change. I have pulled my boat with, obviously, my dually (454), and then a few times with a 2003 (520 ft lb)Dmax 3/4t. The diesel is just effortless. Half the throttle to get the rig moving, no real strain over hills. Floorboards much cooler. Less strain, less heat means longer life and less chance of parts breakage somewhere between Barstow and Havasu.
If I cared about mileage, I would be driving a hybrid.
The price of fuel, either gas or diesel, is whatever it is. I have no control over it. I'll not let it control what I drive, though. Life's too short.

actually, you are incorrect. when the silverado came out in 2001 you could only get a 3500 in a dually. it had a gvw of 11400lbs. the 2500HD had/has a gvw of 9200lbs. in 2004, GM came out with the 3500 single wheel option. it had a gvw of 9900lbs.
just to set the record straight. :D :D

I agree fuel prices make no difference to me either. I just keep seeing people say they do not want the diesel because of fuel price, but in the end it is a better way to go.
