Will a five channel be ok without getting to hot or should I go with two seperate amps?

They all get hot depending on your install. 2 would probably be better but if you are limited on space one can work. Put fans on it.

Thanks. I heard 4ohms is better than 2ohms as for how hard the amp is working? Any imput on this?

Yes. The lower the ohm load, the less the resistance, the higher the output on the amp (with an unregulated power supply).
More output = more heat.
Most guys don't want to spend money on a big amp, and not use it to it's potential. It's kinda like buying a 1,400HP engine, but putting a 3,000 RPM limiter on it.
Most guys just load them as low as possible, then get some good circulation over them and call it a day.

Something can be said for circuitry as well, like a class 'D' that will run much cooler due to the setup or maybe it is class 'B', somebody knows. Look into JL Audio or even better and you should not have a problem. Just don't buy on Watts Per Channel or RMS numbers alone !!!

So running an amp at 4ohms is less load than 2 ?

More resistance = less power output
Just think of the speaker resistance as the throttle plates on a carb. Lower ohms means the plates are open farther, and the engine revs higher.

The sub I have is 2ohms. Can I run the 4 6.5's at 4ohms and the sub at 2ohms on a 5 channel amp? Should I buy a 4ohm sub?

I think it depends on the amp- some will not take a 2 ohm mono load.

1994 called, they want their amp back. :D
That right there was funny. :rollside:

SWb is right... 1994 wants the amp back :D
There are a 5 channel amps out that the sub portion of the amp is class D
Put fans on it and call it a day...
If you think you'll over drive the amp, go with a biamped system....

The stuff I buy at the swap meet says 3,000 watts at 4 ohms, but nothing about 2 ohms?

It has been my experience that putting the high current sub section of the amp into the same housing as the high end just causes phenominal heat. Especially true of boat application where amps are in an enclosure somewhere with no air.
The sub amp should be separate for care-free use.
Anyone that says you don't need fans is either not asking much out of their system or they just don't have a system.

Or, their amps have buil-in variable speed fans :rollside:

Yes, so much the better. However, you still need to get the hot air out and the cooler air in. The biggest problem is air in and out of the container that the amps are mounted in. The amp could have three built in fans, but if they are just circulating the hot and hotter air around, they don't do much good.
One must ventillate the environment the amps are in - was my point.

Yes they do. :D

I use two of these in the amp compartment. It draws air from the side cuddy cabin area and blows air into the side amp compartment. When I switch those blowers on, its cools almost right away.So far the best idea I seen that works really good.http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cgi?keywords=blower%20motor&cart_id=791119260&session_id=431916819&view_id=39573

6 ch Infinity to power up 4 - 6.5" and 2 - 10" subs, no problem.

Locogringo has 2 of them... He runs one for the left and the other for the right... each powers a sub :)

I rn a 4 channel xtant at 2 ohm load never had a heat problem with it.It isnt mounted in the engine compartment but along side the passenger seat on my boat between seat and side of boat gets some air flow by there but where amp sits is very close to water line so i assume it is a cool spot.
My uncle also mounts his amps in the same spot on his elim 23 eagle forgot what amps he has but he has never had a problem with heat either while others with the same amps have.Just cant remember what amps not fosgates either!!!
Maybe ppi amps?

If you go with the right 5 channel amp you should have no probs at all.
I am really impressed with the Memphes Bells
