I always stay at the Saint James on Sixth Ave. It's about a 100 yr old place that was remodeled about ten years ago. Walking distance to everything in the Gaslamp. Last time I satyed there I think it was around $120/night.

If you stay in Old Town, They have a shuttle that runs at least evey half hour to the Downtown area. It costs less than $1.50 each way, and runs untill 0200 hours everyday. Most hotels in the Old Town area have a coupon for a free trip every other ride.
