A seller and I are at odds. He doesnt know his HP rating. What he thinks and what I believe is a differance of almost 4k in price of the boat.
1998 mercruiser v8 7.4 mpi
I'm thinking its HP is listed at 330 according to this site http://www.perfprotech.com/home/techtips/7.4L_longblock_replacement.htm
He thinks it's over 350hp
I'm a novice at this stuff.
Thanks in advance for the help.

A Merc package like that has to have a rating on it somewhere online.

your saying 330 hp and the seller is saying its 350 hp.. and the 20 hp will make a $4000 difference in the price? if he wants to argue, then let him keep it. there are alot more boats for sale.

That one is a 310HP 454.. They also had another one (like the one that was in my old boat that was 385HP)

If he is saying 350 that still fits into the 300-350 category as far as I'm concerned.

Offer him a price and tell him to take it or leave it.

got any pics or more details of the boat? just about every boat owner thinks his boat is worth more then it really is. :D i always go with the idea the the burdon of proof is with the seller.. if he claims the motor is a certain HP, then he needs to be able to prove it.

1998 24ft Cheetah Stiletto, Closed bow, unknown hours (seller cant find the hour meter, if it exist) Interior looks great, boat looks great, motor I guess is fine.
He's had it for 1.5 years, and used it 6 hours.

The 7.4 rated at 330 HP was a carb motor. Merc stopped production of these
motors in 93 or 94 The later Merc 7.4's were injected and rated at 310 HP. There is a considerable difference in value between a 454 Mag (385HP) and the 7.4's

As RD said it's a 310 hp MPI. I do see a K&N filter though:)
That engine is dead set on that HP number. Not easy to upgrade it if you want more. Not one of Merc's best setups.

not to get to personal but you were looking to spend 50k,i hope you changed your mind and you are only spending about a 1/3 of that on the boat in question.

If you do like the boat and really want to pursue it, Im sure you could call cheetah and get a likely location for the hour meter from them.

A compression and leakdown test will tell you a lot about the motor. But with no hour meter, I would never pay OVER NADA for a boat. If the motor is still strong, because 7.4's will usually loose compression long before any parts break inside, it may be worth a low ball offer.
Darrell.

If it's 310 hp, which it is, don't worry about the hours, they last 10-20 years.
