How do you know your computer has a virus? What program detected it? Or are you wanting to install an anti-virus program and you don't know how? Couldn't tell from what you posted.

There's always Ad Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) Might be worth a try.

You can block popups with your internet browser settings
(Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Privacy tab - at the bottom)
(Mozilla Firefox>Tools>Content tab - first check box)
or with a program such as Pop-Up Stopper (Free version download here (http://www.download.com/Pop-Up-Stopper-Free-Edition/3000-7786-10048866.html?part=dl-PopUpStop&subj=dl&tag=button). ).
There are several programs that when used together will keep your computer clean and free of adware, trojans and viruses. I posted a bunch of links to some of them here (http://new.***boat.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1064752&postcount=23).
Avoid reinstall of XP if possible is what I'm saying. Only reinstall if your system is just completely toast despite trying everything else. :D If you need to reinstall XP afterall, make sure you back up/save any data and documents that are important to you on another computer or external hard drive or on CD's or on DVD's. A fresh install will wipe out everything. Make sure you REALLY want to do that.
I Googled and found these
Windows XP Instructions And Guides - ITS Help Desk (http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/)
and
Reformatting Your Computer Using Windows XP (http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/reformat.htm)
if it comes to that those might be the step by step you were seeking. Good luck. :clover:
