I am looking to buy a late 90's / early 2000 21' ultra open bow. I want to know what the difference in speed would be in lets say jet vs an I/O with the same power plant. What would be the pro's & con's of each type of drive.

I had a 2002 Ultra jet with a 454 carb. With a place it ran a about 51-54 mph . Loved it just didn't have the time for it .

I had a 22 Ultra Stealth 454 marine power/Jet.
Could have possibly been one of the most fun boats i've owned. The same boat with an IO would be faster but the jet was like a slot car.Wouldn't mind owning another one for a second boat.

We had the Ultra 21 with the 6.2L and I/O and it ran low 60's. It got on plane very fast and did everything well and the mpg were great compared to our old 454/jet powered boat. WE could run around all weekend on a single tank of gas...it was great. We ski'd, wakeboarded, and tubed behind it all the time and it worked great.

I have an 02 21' Stealth with a stock 502 (415hp) crate motor with a setback Dominator pump, my top speed is 59mph (gps) with me and my wife on board. If I had an outdrive I would expect to see somewhere around 65+mph as a top speed (and a whole lot better gas mileage). :) Outdrives really have their advantages with performance and fuel economy but it really depends on where you go boating. I love jetboats for their shallow water capabilities and ease of maintainence.

An I/O will need about 300 HP to get in the low 60mph range. A 350 Mag will get it done without a problem. The jet would need a 502 (410hp) to get the same speed.
Both packages have their pros and cons. The I/O will get better fuel economy, have more seating, less noise, and be a better ski boat. The jet is more safe (no prop), can run in less water, and is more fun to drive in my opinion.

I've got a 21' Jet - it's a blast to drive and great in shallow river conditions. I get 50-55 (max) on the speedo with a MP 454 with the wife and a I/O would get better mileage- but gas is cheep  and this thing is fun.

94 jet LX with 502, 60 all day long. It's for sale AFTER this season/lol. Great all around boat and I got the jet for the shallow water.
