Neighbor girl is turning in her leased BMW 3.
After 3 years, barely 4.000 miles on it.
Garaged at work and at home, the car is immaculate.
Is their an advantage to low miles when turning in a lease?
We have almost 100K miles on our GMC truck.
Runs as strong as the day we bought it, uses no oil, looks new.
Is it worthless with that many miles?
What's a lot of miles these days?

.
It really all comes down to the eyes of the beholder. 100k to some people doesn't mean shit, to many others it means "that car" is probably near death.

She rides her bicycle everywhere.
Is there the opposite of charging for extra miles?
Still has that excellent Bavarian brewery smell.

to me it is what kind of car/truck.... I had a Acura with 240k on it and it had very few probs and I trusted driving it far..... I also had an Oldsmobile.... when I hit 104k I did not trust it and it was a pile of crap.... didn't go but another 4k before its repairs exceeded it's value.... as for value.... mile to bring it down.... just because you are closer to the thing wearing out in the engine..... think of it as a woman..... she sleeps with 4 people... still pretty new, then the girl that has slepted with 300 people.... she may have some secret moves and some great stories.... but she is pretty much worn out....

Depends on the vehicle, like a Toyota or a Honda, it would not mean much, but a Malibu or Taurus, I would think it is near it's death.

There is no opposite to charging for miles over the agreement. If you're not going to drive, don't lease. It's a waste

We have just over 300,000mi on two 2000 chevys with the 6.0. They pull trailers everyday sense they were new. I can still light up the tires from a standstill. Gotta love that.

The life of the car depends on the make and how much it was serviced... I've owned cars that were serviced to death and they went to hell after 50K miles... I now own a MB 500sec with 450k on the odometer and it's still the original engine. Only major work to the engine was a valve job about 80k miles ago. Still runs good.

i agree.. i put well over 300,000 on my 85 toyota truck before installing a new motor. now the gmc sonoma i bought in 92 well that barely made it over 130k before losing the motor. our 97 gmc safari mini van with a 4.3 was over 250k when i sold it and it ran fine. 2000 dodge caravan was 229k when i sold it to my wifes brother a year ago and they havn't had any problems with it.
how a vehicle is cared for and used has alot to do with how many miles you can squeeze out of it.

I have an 00 Navigator that will clip 187000 today.. :) I'll be driving it to the river every weekend this summer and I don't expect any problems. If you let your car warm up in the morning, and change the oil frequently then a good motor should outlast you!
All of my friends have always said I have "wednesday" cars.. Honestly I don't think I get lucky in that regard I just keep them clean and let them warm up in the morning.

She could probably buy the BMW at the end of lease price and get a real good deal! She could even buy it and re-sell and make a good profit.

Even a low mileage lease she would have been 26000 miles short of reaching................
I'd only guess money doesn't matter to this lady.

I think it depends on the the make/car.
I would not own a out of town car/truck that had over 100K miles (Diesels excluded)
My daily driver has 120K miles and runs great. A faulty alternator did leave me on the side of the road last year and I would not want that to happen with a boat behind be 200 miles from home.

We had a 1980 Ford Bronco that had 380,000 miles on it. My dad had given it to me when it had 360,000 miles on it just to use back and fourth to work (approx 5 miles round trip). I sold it to a friend of my dad's. He was towing a boat back from Sacramento and smoked the engine. We checked up with the mechanic doing the rebuild and hae said the engine looked like it had just been put together. It all depends on how the vehicle is taken care of and "maintained".

As said, depends on make and model. I would get in my '98 Civic that has 180K miles on it and drive it anywhere and not worrry about it. I would be hesitant to get in my Dad's Lincoln with 90K and drive around the block since he has been having tons of issues with it.

You still have the option to sell your leased vehicle at the end of your lease the same as you would on a purchase. In fact, you actually would probably owe less to the bank in comparable situations on the lease when you factor everything in to the expense.
I would be VERY ineterested in purchasing this car from your neighbor if she would like to sell it. At the very least, I would be happy to coach her on how she might be able to extract some of her money back that she has invested over the last 3 years.

it all depends on how it was maintained/driven. I personally would not buy a car with over 75k miles on the clock or that was older... lots of bad things happen with time... lots of bad things also happen when a car just sits.

I wouldn't buy another car with over 55k miles on it. Thats not necessarily high, but I couldn't be too sure on the upkeep. My blazer not has 163,000 and still runs strong. I'll be looking for a new truck soon, but i'm sure the next owner will have a truck that will last a long time.

Miles don't bother me for the most part. Its the warrenty period I'm more interested in. Once its outta warrenty, its gotta go. My luck seems to be 2 days out and boom, major failure.
As for the BMW lease, you dont wanna turn that back in unless the value tanked or the end value is higher than the value. My Caddy is leases and I plan to use every mile on that lease before I give it back. :)
