Looking to get a BMW X5 for the wife. Tow rating is 6,000lbs and we have small river jet boat. I know the rating is fine but I am more concerned with power of the V6 3.0 X5 for pulling up a grade. I know a 4.4 V8 is available but for alot more $$$$$$.
So does any one have experience towing with the X5? And what do you tow.
Thanks

There's some good reading on the X5's and their towing capabilities here in the sandbar, do a search to find out more......

Tobtek has one for sale in the spam section, you might want to PM him, and ask if he ever towed with it.

My sales manager tows a small boat and his vintage race car behind one that has over 100k miles on it. His is the 3.0 IN-LINE 6 cyl.
Someone else I know tows a 25-27ish foot boat with his.

I had the 3.0. I never towed with it. It wasn't gutless, but I did have a lot of problems with it.

What's the torque with the inline 6 and what are the gears in the rear? That might help you in your decision.
Towing a boat to the river in the summer? "Dis iz not vat vee had in mind ven vee built dat Ma-cheen." :D

Just my $0.02, but I wouldn't want to tow much with a short narrow wheelbase vehicle, like an X5 or a Jeep. Besides, how much of a baller can you be towing a ditch pump with a BMW??? c'mon... :D :D:D

I think RD mentioned towing his Nordic with an X5. I seem to remember him saying it towed better than his Navigator... I could be wrong...

We used to pull my DCB Mach22 with the 2003 X5 we had at the time. It worked/pulled WAY better than the Ford F150 I also had. And thats when the 2003 4.4 X5's had 282hp, not sure on the new 07's but our 2004 4.4 we have listed in the spam section has 325hp ( is that right Zigg, or is it 345?? can't remember) I WOULDN'T be pulling a 28' magic from San Diego to Havasu, but your small jet boat.... NO PROBLEM! you will be impressed!
here is the link to the X5 we are selling to get a larger family vehicle ( she doesn't know she's getting a 1998 caravan yet :) )

this is our 3'rd X5, they have been VERY reliable, fun to drive vehicles. Let me know if you have any questions about ours forsale, or any other X5 question. I worked at a local SD BMW dealership for 12 years..... ALSO IF you buy new, ZIGGY here is the guy you want to be calling. He will treat you right.

Ouch!! Baller????? You havent seen the ditch pump.
Luckily, most of the towing is from the house to the ramp. Boat is parked 40' off the river. I do however tow back home once a year for winter service and need to pull the buggy on "t" trailer to Glamis once a year from Blythe.
Thanks for the input. Oh yah, mom wants a pontoon now also. No I will not tow the pontoon on the highway with the BMW.

from what I understand it has some high tech crap goin on and makes all kinds of little adjustments while your driving. it is supposed to be safe to tow with. I have not put a hitch on it yet but I would like to for launching. I really dont know how comfortable I would feel towing with that short wheelbase on the highway. I told the girl I was gonna put a hitch on the back of it "she looked at me as if I was retarded". It is really nice to drive to the river great little vehicle. I'll stick with the sub for long hauls.

I had a 4X4 Ford Ranger V-6 2.9 back in '86 that pulled my 19 ft jet boat w/ 350 chevy and fully loaded down w/ camping equipment in the truckbed. I got 18 - 20 mpg those trips running 65 - 80 mph.
