Since my 21 wont make it, what is the best way to get to Catalina and where to stay. The wife and kid want to go and weve never been before.

San Pedro, Dana Point and LB have boat shuttles to the island called catalina express.
You can also blast over there in a helo...
Check out the web site www.catalina.com for more info.
Have fun

OK, so I see the way to get there, now, is it worth staying overnite? If so, where is a decent place?

Take the helicopter over there.......15 min. Cool ride.
U can stay at the Snug Harbor Inn or rent one of the condos on the cliffs with a great view.

I enjoy waking up at the island and smelling the sea-very peaceful and quiet
We stayed at the:
-2x Pavilion, very close to beach
-1x BW canyon resort...up the hill, very resonable but needed a facelift 5 years ago.
-1x on the boat
family is trying the metropole this Easter - I hear it is nice.

For your second trip, book at the Banning House at the Isthmus (Two Harbors). We take the "rag-boat" over several times a year and like it better than Avalon.
