View Full Version : Has your diesel's MPG dropped

It seems like lately my milage has dropped. I've heard from others that the new low sulfer diesel has decreased milage and I'm curios if there is any truth to that. I seem to recall getting 2-4 more MPG than I'm currently getting.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Nope, but I will look at it more closely. The problem being is that my truck is not yet broke in, so hard to get accurate consistent numbers.

Make sure you use a good injector cleaner.I like Lucas Injector cleaner and upper cylinder lubracant. Also change your air filter often.Anytime I see my milage drop I put a new filter in.You'd be suprised at how much performance and milage you can loose from dirty air filter.

Mine is hard to tell because I lifted it around the same time all the changes in the fuel happened. I only went to 35" tires... but I used to avarage around 16MPG all around.. and sometimes even hit 21MPG highway... and now all I see is 12.1MPG city or highway

(Duramax LBZ) I lost an instant 4 mpg after having the "gloplug recalibration" recall done. Obviously it was more of a fuel mapping change. It runs better but lost mileage. It is now in the "normal" range compared to other people I talk to. Still good but not amazing like before. It is way more sensitive fuel consumption wise, to acceleration or pulling a load now.

My 6.0 PSD just threw a turbo. When the dealer took it apart it was all rusted out. They said it is fairly common thing now that the ultra-low suphur diesel is the only thing available. The dealer told me to make sure to always use a cetane booster, and at least once a week to make sure and really jump on ity and blow the crap out of the system. Good thing this happened while it was still under warranty!!!

No milage lost, has gone up actually. Truck does run better on the new fuel too, it was always hit or mis prior to the new fuel.

Mileage hasn't dropped but the price of Fuel has more than tripled since I purchased my 1988. Just took this yesterday.

Mine hasn't dropped. I put ~4000 miles on it last month and got 18.7 mpg (mixed city and mountain roads no freeway stuff). Ditto on the air filter and Lucas ALSO do the fuel filter.

No mileage drop. I have noticed the oil doesnt get as dark as fast as it did before. Who knows, maybe xtra low is better? Mines a '99 7.3, so far so good.

Not when it shortens the life of the IP and Injectors.
Always add something like Power Service.;)

This is the truth...the new fuel doesn't lubricate as well as the old stuff so it is a good idea to put an additive in, at least every other tank. Adding two stroke oil and an additive is becoming a big thing.

Any reccomendations on a specific cetane booster?

How much do these additives cost? I'm looking for a new tow rig and diesels are being considered. I figure the higher cost of fuel is offset by the better mileage but now this makes me wonder.

No change in mine. Still gets bad mileage just like when new. Just got an update from GM too. BTW, personally I've NEVER seen a vehicle improve in performance or mileage after break in period. (85,000 miles, 2005 lly) Still gettin' about 15 back and forth to Havi empty at 72-76 mph cruise.

Seems like a small drop to me. I'm now getting 13.5 with a 4.5 inch lift and 35's. I remember getting 15 or so, but it could have been a fanasy.. :)
I only use mine for pleasure, not commuting, so it's not so bad.

If you use the wrong additives though, and you get caught, they can impound your truck.:D

05 lly from the zoo yesterday average mileage on display was 20.4, it is normally 17 & a little...The only change was a little different route home that added a few miles but no stop & go....
