Hey Gang
I have a 20.6 foot Kachina mini day cruiser that I want to make an open bow. Anyone have any ideas or experience with this kind of job?

Check over in the Cats and Tunnel section. Friend of AA and TA (Mike) is cutting his big Daytona into an open bow. There is a thread up on it named Should I cut it or not.

77eliminator,
Do you get much flexing of the hull?

That's just like I want mine to be, do you have any "in depth photos" you could email me? Do I get one of those brown thingies to go with my boat?
Thanks
Brent

No unusual flex. By the time you support / block in the walk through area, glass in the floor and add gussets around the edge you should be good to go. Weight is about the same by the time you add the interior.

great job on the boat.. looks great, i have thought about doing that to my 23' day cruiser only making it into an open bow/cuddy.

Even though it turned out well, I had second thoughts when the deck was on the laying on the floor. Taking the saw to the deck is not for the meek. Just be sure thatÂ’s what you want

I have a '78 20' Hallett SS v drive that was made into an open bow before I bought it. I would suggest you find someone who has experience doing it, maybe 77Eliminators guy. I was told by the previous owner of my boat that Cole did the work on mine.
77Eliminator,
Your boat turned out awesome.

I guess I should have looked closer at the pics. It looks like you beefed up walk through pretty well. Do you get much leg room in the back seat? I would love to change my boat over to a back bench and buckets but my engine sits pretty far forward.

Bocco,
Is the boat in your avatar a Hallett SS and is that the boat your talking about changing to a bench?
If so I could get you some measurements, mine has a bench.

I have 11" between the back of the front seat to the bench for leg room. Thats 2" more than the back seat of my wifes Mustang. If you dont have a beer gut you could always gain a few inches by moving the front seat forward. You also gain the bow seating.

I've got a 23 Sleekcraft Executive that I would love to do this to. It's an outboard so it does have some room. Post more pictures?

Not a Hallett, it's an 81 Eliminator 20.6 V-drive.
Thanks

I'd like to take credit for it, but it was like this when I bought it. I was told that Cole Boats cut open the bow and re-gelcoated the boat. I have a few photos of the bow being done, but I would have to have them scanned.

I'll get some pictures of the seat bases in the bow of my boat. It was a hard deck that was made into an open bow also.

Why an open bow? Function. The open bow fits the way we boat. I have two small girls and the extra room is great.
Plus, it's different. You don't see alot of twin turbo v-drive open bows.

Here's some pictures of the open bow section w/ the cushions out. Mine's a little different than 77 Elim''s in that mine has an extra bulkhead and the walk-thru portion has an opening. Hope this helps. I really like the open bow, it's very functional and looks good,IMO.

Get the saw. I talked to the upholstery man today, he said yea if I got it cut and glassed he'd do it. He wants to go over the plan as far as where to cut so he could make it look as though it came that way. I'll let you know as the project goes forward.
