A boating question, can you believe it?
I am trying to get a new boat and it has 496HOs for motors. What SAFE bolt on mods are there that wont give me any hassles to add some HP. No Raylar for me.
I'm trying to get from 56 MPH to 60 MPH with twin 496s.

Remove the turbolators. Depending on hull limitations that should get you about 2-3 MPH and it is free! Otherwise a complete exhaust system that will definately get you to 60 MPH.
Did this on a friends boat and he picked up a soild 3-4 MPH.

The cheapest route to gain a little would be to take out the turbulators, and fine tune your prop selection. I would think that would get you a few mph.
Expensive route would be the Dana exhaust or CMI, again with proper prop selection.
Neither involve opening up your engines.

Turbulators are plates located at the exhaust risers that are designed to prevent condensation from running down and effecting the exhaust valves from corrosion. The problem is that they really restrict your exhaust flow, and aren't necessary on most applications. Removing them really improves flow. Do a search on OSO, and you will find some posts from Raylar about them. They also have dyno results from before and after, as well as guideliines on who can, and who shouldn't remove them.
The removal on both sides takes less then 30 minutes, and requires no parts.

What are turbolators?
Who makes a good exhaust system?
They are a sheet metal reducer that is sandwiched between the manifold and the elbow. They can be removed in about 30 minutes per motor. They are designed to stop water reversion/ condensation from entering the engine. If your exhaust manifolds are "higher" then the exhaust tips you should not have any reversion problems.
CMI makes the "Best" exhaust sytem. i understand that Dana has introduced a system that works very well also.

The best thing you can do, is to take the cover off your speedo, and tweak the needle to read higher. Then just put a smile on your face, and go boating. :)

I did a K&N too, it looks like its going to restrict alot more then the stock one but it didnt make a difference on mine either, and I feel better that its stopping more particles..

I'm no expert, but from what I learned is your engine is tuned for 89 octane. When I was running a 7.4mpi, I switched to 89 from 91 and the black transom was gone...and it actually ran better.:)

The props that are shown tend to burn at high speeds right before the cups. Merc. came out with some props that don't burn and perform better. I've had hill work on mine a couple of times and they perform pretty good til around 70 then they start slipping alittle. I just brought them back to do alittle work. Really nice out of the hole though. I only go maybe half throttle and the boat rolls right over with 30P.
My boat has a 1.8 ratio and the new props only go to 28pitch. Thats not enough for me. I could probably buy them and have them tweeked, but I'm done trying to go faster.....at least with this boat:D
Alot of good info on the b3 and the new props on OSO.

Those Bravo 3s will restrict your speed more then anything...with all that prop in the water, you're never going to go real fast....
They are great for low speed handling and cruising.....you heard the expression...."built for confort, not for speed"....

Leo,
I removed my plates before I got the CMI's and there was a very slight increase in power. If I were you I would take those suckers out. It takes no more than 1/2 hour for both sides.

Per Bob at Dana, there was no remapping involved. They added some fuel pressure via an adjustable regulator. See the dyno results on Dana's site.

Not sure JR. I will not be in the market for headers for another season but these turbulators, or whatever they are called stop condensation from running back into the engine. When you fire up the engine these turbulators trap the water allowing the exhaust to blow out the trapped water.
My mechanic whom I trust 100% said not to do it, I am gonna stick with him.

No problem, let me know if you want to try a 24P. But, in order to know if it's the right prop for your application, you are going to have to go full throttle to see if the engines rpm's are within specs.

I am running a 24pitch, removed the turbs, no mufflers (thru transom but under water till on plane) 87octane, and everything else is stock. I run 61.8 on GPS with a measly little 6.2 mpi. You should be able run faster than 55.

You gotta open that thing up. I run in Havasu right against the rev limiter but never hit it unless I come into some chop. It will run right at 5150 RPM with a 28p but my boat is 29'. Leo,
Take a socket set with a 8" extension. Hopefully the set will a socket small enough for the hose clamps you will need to loosen. Remove the four nuts that fasten the riser to the manifold. Loosen the hose clamps on small hose and work the hose lose. A this point lift the riser up over the studs and you will see the plate. There are gaskets on both sides of the plate. I reassembled using both gaskets, but it can be done with one. Reassemble. Don't recall the exact torque specs. Tighten evenly in a cross pattern and do not over tighten.

95% of the way there. I have a signed contract and the airline tickets have been purchased to go sign on the dotted line. So unless something comes up that I just "must" buy before then, it is a done deal. I am holding out that 5% in case a killer deal that I cant pass up falls in my lap before I go and sign away.
On the speed thing and regards to your decisions... I was joking, not being a smart ass. I find it very respectable that you are like that. I'd boat with you any day!:)

I want to do this as well, anybody know what the cons are?
So far, I don't think anyone knows of any. I've had mine out for two seasons now.

So these are the turbolators? I know I have them and mufflers in. I want to remove both. How hard are the mufflers to remove? Can we get pics of those?

The best thing you can do, is to take the cover off your speedo, and tweak the needle to read higher. Then just put a smile on your face, and go boating. :)
LMAO:) :) AND,,, IT'S INEXPENSIVE

After the Chevy 4500 I had an interior more like a fully lined cedar closet, a little wood feels nice!:D
