I'm just wondering what some of you do for handling the computer situation with a copule of teenagers in the house. We have one family computer and it seems that we are having to debug daily. I tell him to only go to the porn sites I pre-approve. Is it time to buy the 17 year old his own? Just curious what other families do?

Yup, we did just that..........ours ended up crashing consistantly or just plain old not doing anything so we went to Office Depot and bought the cheapest CPU they had and been happy ever since. I think with a X-mas deal and rebates we paid about $200 for it. One debugging in a year+ on that unit.

The Office Depot one we got was an E-Machine. I've heard not all good about them but for the purpose its used by the daughter its been great, especially the price and what came included. We had a used Flatscreen and just networked the printer to save on the external expense..............sure has beat always having issues with the home unit.

Well, I guess I am lucky.....my man is the guru! That's what he does.....everything computers! So, our 11 and 13 year old's have their own computer's in there rooms.
And David has spy ware and all the cool stuff on them. And checks, and maintains them weekly....... if not daily. So, not only do they stay off of ours (thank god we do not have to hide stuff), but they have theirs custom to them!
Love it, love it, love it!
And, our son uses he laptop at school because all of the teachers prefer! Kids these days!
Omg, do they have it all or what?

Silver nailed it. A lot of web sites, especially the kind teenagers like, download tracking cookies and software to your computer. Plus hackers really like to attached viruses to these sites because they are so popular. If you don't have a really good firewall, spyware, and antivirus software you get inundated with this stuff, Everytime your kid downloads a music video, or something from Utube, or Myspace, your computer gets a virtually assault of this stuff.
Even so, some gets through, so weekly you need to do a completely spyware and antivirus scan and get this crap off your computer. Plus you need to set this stuff up so that updates are automatically downloaded. I have mine do an update check every day!. I used to do it weekly but it just wasn't good enough (sounds like my sex life).
Actually, the kids know this better than we adults do.
Just tell them they have to do all the computer maintenance. They'll keep it clean. If they don't, no computer use.

On this site, there are FREE spyware downloads that I run in all my company computers AND friends computers. For my friends that REALLY enjoy porn (RCB19), I have taught him how to maintain these programs and he has never had a problem.
www.download.com
The ones I recommend that seem to work for me is AdAware and Spybot. Spybot has an immunization database that is updated, similar to your virus protection.
Just food for thought......and theyre FREE!!

It's funny because my kid was crying tonight about all the pop-ups and problems he's having. I never seem to have problems with mine as long as he stays off it.........

we have two main computers that are located in the den area, that is in site from just about every angle. kids (5, 7, 12, 17) are not allowed to download anything without my approval. both of these computers are emachines (on sale) from best buy and have been trouble free for 2 years. my wife and i have Sony's here at home and at work is all Dell.
