Officials say it will take days, or even weeks, to clean up the blue cheese dressing and concrete sealant that spilled into a canal leading to the Salton Sea Tuesday.
Union Pacific officials say the accident happened when 28 cars in a freight train derailed in the Southern California desert.
Authorities say the Los Angeles-bound train. on a run from Illinois, derailed for unknown reasons along Highway 111 north of the Salton Sea. Twenty-eight cars derailed, 14 of them overturned.
Hazardous materials specialist Robert Becker says the Coachella Canal was mostly smeared with salad dressing.
He says, quote: "There was blue cheese -- a lot of it." Becker said.
But fortunately, he says there is no threat to the Salton Sea.
