The old workhorse needed some new parts. After almost 500 hrs on our Paul Phaff 575 hp 502 it was done.

The motor is being freshened up and we are going with an Imco outdrive, stand off box and full hydrolic steering. Here is the progress so far.

Just a fresh up on the 575hp that has Merlin heads, Crane hydrilic roller cam and JE pistons.
I'm hoping to see 85MPH with the 2" shorter Imco drive and standoff. Is 4 to 5 mph increse resonable expection?

Anyone ever see the 24 Hallett closed bow with a open bow conversion? I know they make the walk thru, but I didnt even know they made a 24 closed..
How does it run with that power?

The 24 is good ride. It has the same bottom as the 210 that has been set up as a ski-race boat with big power many times. It ran 77-78 mph with the 575 when it was fresh. I hope to pick up 5 mph with the rigging changes and fresh motor.
As far as the open bow I've only seen it as a walk through.

Looking nice! I have the same boat, Imco drive, dual ram full hydraulic steering, and the standoff box, except mine is a 3" up. A 270 step had to be retrofitted. I love the boat. You will be happy with the changes.
I would like to see the cut out walk thru (been thinking about it) if you see any pics.
Here is a pic of mine, just for comparison!

What do you mean a 27 step? They put in a step after the boat was done?

The swim step is from a 270, not a step bottom.
Yes, this is Ron's old boat. I bought it less motor, and it once again has a blower motor in it. I was tickled to find it like I did, and it has been awesome. My buddy owns a boat shop, and has worked on many 240's, and he swears this is the best handling one he has driven. I haven't driven another 240, so I will take his word for it. I am happy!

2dasand, I like your boat. What motor do you have in that thing? What prop & gear?
The motor went back in mine over the weekend and fired it last night. Ready for some water testing.

Well not quite :D
The Hallett 24 is/was a unique Bud Bailey design with 3 sets of strakes on the bottom with a shallower pad for more performance. It's also the same bottom as used on their new 25' 255-S with an integrated swim platform adding the additional length.
The Hallett 21 Vector bottom is basically a Schiada 21 River Cruiser clone.
The Hallett 21' 210 is a deeper V with more rocker... a more conventional bottom.

I wanted to thank Chip the owner CG Auto Marine for the help with the motor. He works on all types of performance cars and boats in Campbell Calif. Bob at Gromm Racing for the head work, and my son Bobby for the help with the the stand-off and steering.

So can it handle big power? I know a lot of people like the step bottom, but some sraight bottom V hulls seem to be pretty efficient, would this be one of them?

Not meaning to switch brands, but the SleekCraft 26' and 28' Enforcer bottom is said to be one of the more efficient non-steppers. The 26' Enforcer runs neck/neck with the 26' Heritage (stepped) under the same power. The Enforcer was their original "rough water" bottom.
I know Hallett has two versions of their 27 footers. The regular 270 and the 270-S (stepped). I wonder how they run against each other with similar power. I don't know if there is two versions of the 240 or not.

In general step bottoms are a little more efficient but straight Vs are more stable with big power. There are alot of brands that haven't dropped their non-step models for that reason. Also I think the longer the boat the more need for steps.

First off thanks, Your boat is looking great! I especially love the headers! I have the Imco manifolds, but nothing beats the look of the headers!
I have been using a Hydromotive prop that has been reworked and is supposed to be a 26, but we are not really sure and do not know the history of it (the previous owner had it as a backup). The guy I bought the boat from worked for Imco, so it has Imco everything. He had the drive built, and to be honest I don't know what gears are in it. I am going to experiment with different props, and make a decision very soon. I am switching over to an XR shaft, so I will be comitted to Merc props. I have the 3" rise standoff box, and a -1 lower unit, so I have a pretty high X-dimension compared to most. I got the boat together the end of last season, and it worked so good that I did not want to screw with it. Now, this season I want to work on speed. I had it to 74 with my GPS speedo last season. At that speed the prop was done.
As for the motor, I have what is basically a tricked out 525SC motor. The motor was built by Concept Marine in Montclair, and is a roller 468, with all nice parts, a Weiand 177 from a 525SC motor, topped off with an 1150 dominator and Imco manifolds and Gatlain mufflers. They have built a similar package and dynoed it just over 600HP, but I have a bigger carb, and slightly bigger camshaft. We did not dyno it, but I expect it is somewhere in that range.

Well, how did it run? Did you notice a difference with the standoff box?

HighVoltage 329

Just a break-in run so far, so no speed numbers. The steering works great, tight, no slop at all, solid. The boat comes on plain well with the taller gear (1.32) and shorter drive. The stand-off seems to give more trim leverage allowing the boat to ride higher with less trim. The handling has improved and has a nice feel. So far so good.

Yours sounds like it has the same response as mine. Very little trim input makes a huge difference. I hope you enjoy it!
