It was in a Genesis boat in HB a while back. I have the 6.2 and was curious about the difference so I want on Mercury Marine and couldn't find anything.

6.2 + .030 overbore = 383;)
(6.2/377) is just a 4" stock bore 383;)

You think an Alpha One would be able to handle that kind of HP?

Friend of mine was a merc dealer when this engine was introduced . He's got engine # 1 in his 22 Pachanga . The 6.2 [ 377 , sligthly shorter stroke than the 383 , I think ] is around 350 HP SAE , while the 383Merc stroker is around 350 at the prop . His Changa runs close to 68 mph with this engine . He's working for Channel Marine in Oregon now , if anyone want to have more info .

I had twin 6.2s in my '04 Searay. They are 377 cu. in. and 320 hp. Standard 350 Chevy is 4.0 inch bore and 3.48 inch stroke. The 6.2 liter is 377 cubic inches by leaving the bore stock and increasing the stroke to 3.75 inches. The 383 is the same 3.75 stroke but the 4.0 inch bore is enlarged by 0.030. Great motors but mine were not that big a deal over the standard 350 Mercruiser which is 300 hp. That extra 20 horses is quite expensive.
Mercury Marine buys most of their engines as complete long block assemblies from General Motors. The 6.2 and 383 were bought as bare blocks and assembled in Stillwater, OK using Lunati rotating assemblies. I always just ran mine at 3500 rpm as they were in a cruiser but they would likely withstand more abuse than the standard GM fare.

I've heard the roller cams are ground by Crane for Merc .

When my 6.2's kick the bucket , I'll grab a couple of ZZ 383 GM crate engines from the shop , and go carburated .
The ZZ 383's long blocks we get are rated 425 HP SAE , 450 footpound torque .Fastburn aluminum heads , 4 bolt main, forged crank , powedered metal rods , hydraulic roller cam and alu roller rocker arms ,brass frostplugs , flexplate and harmonic balancer . 9.6:1 compression , 92 oct recommended .
Intake and 750 carb of your choice required . $ 5.735 cdn .
604-278 1880 .
The package rrrr posted is a helluva good deal !

To my knowledge the 383 Merc is a re-man engine. It only makes somthing like 325hp.
I currently have the 6.2mpi in my boat and it is great (not fast enough) but does get awesome gas mileage and is very reliable. I run a solid 61.8 on GPS in a 23ft boat with big stereo, half a tank or more in fuel, two people and a couple coolers.

I have the 383 merc in my 23 Dana. I run at a little higher elevation so I got lower gears in my rig. I mostly ski and wake board. It works great for that.At 3500 and under, rpms it doesn't burn fuel. Wide open on Mead with three quarter tank of fuel I can hit 60mph. Can't quite do it with full tanks. It works for me. 95 percent of the time I'm happy. But like everyone else, once in a while I wish I could go faster. But at the end of the day at the lake, I like that it didn't break me to fill the boat back up with fuel.
