Was it me or did the top runners seem really spread out this year? I heard some talk about the top runners having individual staggered starts. If that is true that would take a lot of the fun out of it. Even if it is not a race most of those guys want to be there first.

Predator jumped the flag drop and was out front
PERDATOR was about about 100 yards behind CRC
by the Copper Canyon
CRC had a 1/4 mile lead and was running 193MPH by the Hot Boat raft up and at the end CRC WAS KING AGAIN
CRC was toying with Predator

We actually watched from further south this year, usually at Black meadow landing, and yes, they did seem more spread out, but did not hear anything about a staggard start.........
We thought it was because they broke loose from each other after black meadow....

I was in the channel and they started the parade at 9:45 with a police boat escort. About 10 -15 boats at a time. Some of the enclosed boats were still around until the 4th -5th wave. It took over 1 1/2 to parade all the boats thru the channel.:)

Because I was there at the start when they were released...and it looked pretty even to me. For some reason, "Gone Again" was a few boat lengths back, but the others looked dead even.

You're right, my bad. :notam:
On another note, in the first group, who should the "hard luck" award winner should be given to?
A. The guy from Florida who never made it to the parking lot this year, let alone off the trailer before he broke?
B. The guy with the 40' Skater who broke before Copper Canyon?
C. The guy who took delivery of his new 368 Skater only to lose all the oil and seize a new motor at Black Meadow because of a hose failure?
D. The guy with a twin engine boat getting towed from damn near the full 16 miles from the Springs to the Nautical?
As for me, they tried to supress me by putting the ole HH Tugboat back in the groupings. However, once I burned around 1,000lbs of gas off, the ole HH Tugboat was a new woman and we sure did put the hurt on a few Bayliners and deckboats in that afternoon chop.

I didn't see the start but here is what I know.
There isn't a "flag drop" indicating it's ok to blow and go. We specifically tell all of the drivers that there is a group leader/escort (usually the no. 1 boat of the group per our designation) that is suppose to lead them through the cautionary parts of the lake. Ok, so if they "lose" the escort boat, the drivers are still suppose to adhere to a 50mph rule (per the permit) through these parts. The last thing Predator clarified with me (on the water right before I let Group A go through the channel) is this 50mph rule and I told him yes please adhere it. Did all of the drivers obey the rules to the letter? Probably not....some may have gone 70mph, some 80-90 and some even faster. Believe what you want from this point on.
Personally, I don't think the CRC boat with 1200hp power plants (if that's what he had) is going to be that close to 200mph. Who had the radar gun and can the speed be verified? Not that it matters, just curious.
Next year I think I'll be at Copper Canyon with a radar gun and if the lead boat is going faster than 70mph...automatic disqualification and no longer able to participate in Desert Storm. We can't afford to lose our Coast Guard permit.

I do know he was making 185mph passes the day before the run, so I'd say the 193 is very possible.
And, I'd say the biggest hard luck guy at the Poker Run was Throttle, for towing Predator from the Springs back to the Nautical, and then not even getting a "Thank you" Props to Cameron for being a good guy. He also towed the Gibson boat into the Springs befor towing Predator. Oh, Todd was very thankfull.

Although I wasn't in the lead group this year, all I remember from last year in the "group leader" hammering it before Copper Canyon. We were all very surprised...to say the least. Although Lance and Gary were doing their best to chase him down (not sure they would have caught him), it was still a big gap that probably wouldn't have been there if he wasn't the "group leader".

Agreed. I would think he would need alot more than 1,200HP a side to get close to 190MPH.
PS- thanks again Jim for another great event. Sorry I couldn't make the dinner- rumor has it i would have won some Gibson mufflers?

I was at Spectator Point with a USCG officer, and there was also a USCG officer onboard the group leader. When they went around Grass Island, the boats were lined up together and traveling at the required speed, verified by the USCG official. Did something happen between Grass Island and Copper Canyon?
And I’ll take the heat on Cameron towing Predator. I’ve apologized to Cameron, thanked him and Jamie and even mentioned it to Gary, who thought Cameron was cool with it???
I placed Cameron in that area for the sole reason I didn’t want him to do much of anything, other than keep an open waterway (which is relatively easy in that area due to the size of the lake). Instead, Gibson and Predator went down in his area.
THANKS AGAIN CAMERON AND JAMIE, it wasn’t our intent to have you tow anybody anywhere, but thanks for stepping up and helping out. I know Gary is a stand-up guy, and I’m sure you have an e-ticket ride if interested.
Next year, we’ll be sure to have Vessel Assist and Sea Tow start in that area and then work their way up the lake – they were busy picking up numerous other busted up peeps.
Thanks again Cameron, we appreciate your help, that was pretty cool. Look for your fuel check in the mail - we'll pick up your portion of your charity donation. :)

That's a great idea. We were trying not to pass the pace boat until after Copper Canyon but a bunch of guys took off. I can say for a fact I did not go any faster than 110 since I had the family with me. We got pulled huge by some boats with more than two people.

Anytime you wanna hang out on the West Coast, just look for myself or KROOZIN. However, go ahead and leave those cute little MTI blouses...errr..."shirts" at home. We'll get you some Skater or Cigarette shirts so people know you are an actual performance boater!

Yes...it is a great event. Sometimes we take Havasu for granted since it's in our backyard, but it's always a good time. We just need to talk Art into going back to a Spring and Fall event like the old days.

No card stops for me...it was take your in-laws to the river weekend...so it was about $150 in gas to have my tipsy father in law dump his 32oz bloody mary on the floor about 15 seconds into the boating weekend...so I think the two pair have me beat.

Hey great to talk with you for a lil while on Sun.
I agree with the start, as a spectater, it wasn't as interesting as last year, but it is not a race so whatever. We covered a lot of water Sat and it was great to see all the runners haging out at all the different spots.
See you in 2 weeks!:D
I agree! So we should see you in 2 weeks as long as the wifey is up to it. Things can be different in a few weeks and she may want to stick around for mothers day.

STORY OVER
You must of got your version of what happened sitting on a bar stool at the naked turtle. We were told at the drivers meeting that once all boats made the right hand turn at grass island that the "safety boat"would not drop a start flag and that we could go.At copper canyon to pilot rock we were told to slow to no more than 50mph(see the instructions on page 12 of the event guide) which we did.We were the only boat in the first group to slow to 50mph.Once we reached pilot rock, apatrol boat waved the green flag and motioned us to get going. At this point we could not even see crc rooster tail.We got back up to speed and passed all the other A group boats by black meadow landing and set our sights on the crc boat.By the time we reached the first card stop we were only 150 yards behind him.He circled the card boat and got back up on plane without getting any cards. We stopped and got all 6 of our cards. As we tryed to get up on plane, the motors lugged down like they were loded up.As i pushed the throttles down harder ,the transmission broke. When we raised the hatch, we discovered the sea strainer lid had blew off on the port side and the boat was full of water ,on the verge of sinking. We shut the valve off, pumped out the water, then found the lid which was unusable because it stripped out all the threads.Cameron was nice enough to tow us in and i will never forget his kindness.
So now what does the poker run organizers do with all the boats that ignored the speed limits thru copper canyon-dq them?I doubt it .For us to catch up and only be 150 yards back at the card stop was flat ass hauling the mail.

I wasn't there but I've never known Gary or Larry to fib
or stretch the truth. I've had my neck stretched watching
them pass me a bunch of times!
They're some of the most respected and reputable people
in this business.
That's my take on it. And like I said before the poker run,
maybe it's a sentimental favorite but I've seen that boat
crush all the competition so many times that I suppose I
expect it to continue to do so.
Not taking anything away from the CRC boat, which is
obviously also very fast. He took a couple friends of mine
for a 183 mph burner on Friday.
Thank god that we all got through the weekend safely.

Nice job, Gary...sounds like a repeat of last year with some guys jumping the gun. Sorry to hear about the boat...Dan and I were wondering why you were getting towed.
Keep up the good work- you drive the wheels off that boat every year I've been there.

If Gibson and predator broke, and from what I read 1 engine, why do they need to be towed. Can't they idle back on 1 engine. I know personally Predator did it last year.
We thought about ideling back but the Port motor was in BAD shape and the Starboard motor was acting goofy. They were running great prior to getting to the area near the pump station but we started to loose power. All the gauges looked good until the Port low oil light went on, we didn’t want to do any further damage so we shut it down.
It's always an awkward call to Ron Gibson letting him know that we broke his toy.

From my vantage point south of the pumping station it was around a 150' as 40Skater says but it appeared CRC was still pulling 40Skater...I have no clue what happened at the start...with all the copters you would think there would be video that would show this stuff.
Either way it was one of the best looking first card stop runs I have seen as both boats were running super quick and super tight.

Frankie, whats up? You are the pride of Tennesee. How is your wife, I mean sister? It was good seeing you and woods having fun. You need to come back out here in the middle of the summer and hang at the sandbar. Jeff and Dan, good to see the two of you. Dan you look almost married again. Terry from florida liked what she saw.
