Always been happy with McAffe.
Only buy and load the virus protector - the rest is crap!
And for great Spyware protection check out Spybot.
It's freeware and works very well.

Next time, get a Mac!
I have heard they are not suppose to be able to get a virus.. Is that true..:)

Some one (1) claimed to get a virus that actually affected the OS, but this could not be verified.
Apples can and do get virus' however they have not been able to have any negative effect, as a mac user, you can be a carrier, (magic Johnson) but does not affect you.
You are able to surf the net, with reckless abandon!, not to mention, they work most all the time!
cool thanks for the info..
now with a mac.. don't you have to buy all the software seperate. they don't come loaded or do they. :)

Loaded with what? a bunch of free trial crap, that takes up space and slows down your computer?
You don't have to get rid of the crap you don't need, cause it ain't there to begin with.
Besides, most any thing that you already have, at least any thing that is worth anything, will run using a Mac., apple can go either way, the Pc, only works with it's self.
Do not run out and buy a mac. but when it is time for a new rig, look into it.
When I get a new note book, I will buy it, by the quality of the screen, Pc or Mac I am not that loyal, just the screen is the most important to me.
A friend got a new HP last week, took him hours to delete the pre installed crap, then he pirated what it was he needed to install. Easy News is a great place to down load much of the things that you really need.
:jawdrop: wow.. Thanks for all the info. I was asking because we were going to buy for the kids and I wasn't sure what the differences were.
Thanks for the info.:)

If it is a desktop for the kids, look on ebay for a used 20" Imac, great screen!
Go down to fry's if there is one close to you and look at the screens, you do not want fade when you are off center of the screen, remember the old big screen tv's? If it a lap top for the kids, get a pc, since it will get broke soon and they are cheap enough to through out.
cool. Thanks. good idea. :)

I've been using Trend Micro for about 2 years now and love it (it replaced Norton). Not free but in my network environment I can't afford viruses and downtime. I believe McAfee is a good product too. I have it on a couple machines as well.
Norton sucked imo. Resource hog and had some viruses get through it.

AVG.com is a free online virus protection that works great........been using them on my biz units for a while with better results and no slowing of the comp like Nortons

NOD32 at eset.com
Macs can get a virus and it can run a muck. The thing is the writers do not bother since the Mac population is low right now. the OSX has had many patches to close the holes in the OS so Apple is keeping on top of it. I have herd of hybrid worms that can cross operating systems, just not perfected yet.

I second what Rex says. Dump Norton. It is a HUGE resource hog and will slow down your computer. Unfortunately, even if you uninstall it, there are tons of traces left behind. You will need a good registry sweeper software to get rid of most of the hidden crap before you install the new software. Trend Micro is good, as is the Webroot spyware/antivirus combo pack sold at Best Buy. Good luck. :)

How is it that every MAC user I have seen post on the internet is a computer science genius and they almost always feel the need to impose their superior knowledge and APPLE product on all of us ignorant MS users...??
What a tired subject that is....Yet ongoing...

you can download it yes, free for 30 days, then you have to pay for it if you would like to still keep it active.

I use symantec corporate on both desktops, I used to run Trend Micro on my webserver, it worked great too, Kaspersky is also good.
The reasons that 'Mac's dont get Virus's' is not that they are immune to virus's there are and have been mac virus's through time, but the truth is that 95% of the market is PC so hackers focus on making virus's for these rather than the small percentage of mac's in the world.

Because some of us ARE computer science genius' and do have superior knowledge... that is why people come on here and ask questions... And yes, I am typing this from my MAC, the simplest and most reliable of 5 computers, MAC and PC, here at the house...

Oh snapp....Well I am a Systems Engineer myself but somehow don't feel compelled to brandish my preference as if it is superior and the answer for everyone else. Its one thing to help out and answer the question at hand...But nope...Gotta shove MAC down everyones neck at any opportunity...meh...It gets old
SO maybe holster your brilliance and just answer the ****en question.
Genius', Superior Knowledge...?? How about, "Its what I do"...

I am a lifelong PC/Windows guys, got my MCSE at the end of HS, worked with with large windows server farms, and i can say that Macs are very very nice computers, especially for photoshop and other publishing/graphics applications, they are far more responsive to these type of applications, they work great and have very very few problems, the only drawback to macs are somewhat of a lack of software selection, but that has been rapidly closing over the last few years and you can get just about any software you need to for a mac now.
I'm still running windows, i like it, but i have very advanced knowledge of it. With vista coming out and all the horror stories i have heard windows xp will be the last version i own, next will either be a mac, or a PC with linux.
You can run windows of a mac now very easily too since they switched to intel processors, you can even run both OSX and windows Simultaneously. fyi

What...For me??? I don't recall downplaying the MAC's strengths or weaknesses. If that "INFORMATION" was intended for me then maybe read my post a few more times. I didn't see where anyone asked for all the ***boat IT guys to post up their credentials...heh "Shaking Head"
