Alright, the time has come to retire the 4 year old Dell. it has been a good machine for the most part.
Who is making the best laptop these days? it will be used for internet, e-mail, pictures, and word processing. looking to spend no more than $1200 and would like a 17" screen and a keyboard with a 10-key number pad. These are not mandatory but would like to have them. I used a new Toshiba a few months back for drafting and was really impressed. I know they had a horrible rep a few years back but they seem nice now.
So give me your opinions and if anyone knows where to get a smoking deal, pass it on.
Thanks, Ryan

I recommend something with at least dual cores and four gigs of RAM.

I recommend also checking out Acer. Right now, they're tough to beat for the money.

Another Acer vote here, good bang for the buck.
Or...
Clevo, the makers of Sager, Hypersonic & Alienware systems.
Sager has 3 models within your price.

Toshiba...I have two right now and they are the most durable, hard-working, and reliable laptops you can come by, for a reasonable price. I was going to get a Mac but I found I could get more memory/speed/etc in a Toshiba for less price. Plus Costco usually has some good deals on them.

I bought my MacBook for $1300.
I run Windows on it most of the time.

I got my cheapy Toshiba for 600 bucks, I like it. Here's a review (http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3639&review=Satellite+A135)
.
It works well enough for email and internet. I haven't really used it for anything serious as of yet, but it does have a slot for my card out of my camera and it processes pics quickly enough. Not the 17 inch screen you are looking for though.

This link might help in your decision.

My first choice would normally be a Macbook pro. However I have no allegiance to any type Os or manufacture, so I will purchase my new lap top, Pc or mac. based on the performance of the screen.
I have a sony Vaio 17" HD screen w/ dual cores and love it!!!! If you want something with a nice screen this is it!!!! Can't get it for $1200 though

I'll un-recommend Dell. Good service, but screens are lower quality, the amount of bloatware is bad, and I feel hosed because mine has an expresscard slot which there isn't much made for it yet.
If I was buying now it would probably be Asus or Acer.
Make sure what you get has a decent video card...Integrated sucks.
Core 2 has a slight edge on the Turion but that also means you'll get stuck with the Intel wireless card which is mediocre on range.

this is a whole lot of toshiba for the money and its $50 cheeper here than the Toshiba web site, but if you call them (Toshiba) they will discount you or upgrade the softwear for you. i'd buy costco and have the warrenty
