I have only liabilty insurance on my boat. My buddy insists that getting comprehensive as well is the only way to go since it will pay for a damaged outdrive etc. The cost is 5 times the liability only, about 550.00 yearly. I realize repairing a drive is expensive, but so far I have never had a problem. KNOCK ON WOOD! Any thoughts??

If it catches fire or is stolen, you have to ask yourself if the cost of insurance makes sense compared to the financial loss you'll be taking in those or similar situations. Good luck! :)

550 sounds cheap...Just wait until you come back to your trailer and some one has clipped it...or a lake lice scratches your gel coat...
There was a thread here a couple of days ago where a guy with a new boat was launching and leaned over the control panel to push off to keep from hitting another boat, his "belly" put it in drive and the boat shot forward hitting another boat..The list goes on and on..
Bottom line it's your call, I won't leave home without it. Seen to much chit happen over the years..

Coverage to the drive would only be covered if there was physical damage (hitting the ground, or something in the water)
Insurance doesnt cover the mechanics part.
If you are willing to walk away from your boat if it gets stolen, then dont worry about it, otherwise get the extra coverage.

ALWAYS get full coverage, and here is why.
1. Collision with another boat and they are at fault but do not have insurance much less any money to sue fo.
2. Often leakage in bellows and the resulting damage is covered!!

don't forget to add uninsured boaters. Would suck to get hit by someone without insurance. If they don't have insurance, most likely don't have the money to make the repairs either.

and don't forget recovering a sunken boat. My boat isn't worth very much and $250 yearly covers the whole thing. Nice having that peace of mind.

A lot of good advice here. It boils down to covering your investment. You wouldn't want to loose what it would cost to replace it I'm sure. If the boat is worth $500 bucks, then don't pay the $550. If the boat is worth $7500 then that is a long way from the $550 to be covered.

I pay $600 a year for comprehensive. Deductible is fair and I AAA roadside service is included.
You cant put a price on peace of mind.
