I bought the little one for cash but when I bought the big one last year it was a different issue. I had my broker all set to sell the investments I needed to pay cash when I realized I could finance it for 6.5% and write off the interest. My investments pay a much higher return and the value is still sitting there. I don't mind that it is not paid for when I know I can pay it off at any time and am certainly not talking about using the equity in homes. I don't think I could ever tie a boat loan to my house. Crazy in some eyes but it was an expensive boat.

I was looking at getting a new boat at the beginning of the season. A nice Deck Boat the was around $100k  The owner said that probably 90% of the people come in 10% and 20 year term:eek: ..................I opted for a used deck boat that was about half the price. Uh.......I don't own it but with 55% down my payments are not to bad and they are for five years. :)

If ya mean hold the boats pink slip, and didn't by the boat on an equity line or a re-fi of the house,,,
Then we were,, but just sold it,,, and the new boat will be financed.
We are debtors once again.
Having the pink/title makes for an easy sell transaction.

i can't tell you how tempting it is to dip into my equity and go shopping, especially with some of the good deals i have found on used boats but i just can't do it. we did manage to buy a new tri-toon and sea doo last year with real money and even though its not my dream boat it gets us all out on the water. :D

boats are terrible investments... soooooooo.... therefore I "own" all my other investments (real ones) and I finance the boat. (i.e. best use of capital)
Either way owning a boat is total and complete waste. The best way to save the $$ is to not own a boat in the first place.... ;) ;) Since we are all sick around here, we don't seem to mind owning a hole in the water to which we through our money into. :D :D

Oh well, now I have a Sun Tracker that's in great shape, holds multiple ice chests, rowdy dogs, has the double bimini and a bumpin stereo. When I want to haul ass or go boarding I climb aboard my friends boats....you know, the friends who are all debt up to their eyeballs.

Our current boat is an 06 and almost paid for. Our new boat will be about 65%financed because we are taking the equity out of the old boat and paying off our second.:) Our wakeboard boat was an 05 and we paid cash for it.

Leverage, Leverage, Leverage!!! This is the only way to own toys. Never take money from investments that are earning returns to buy an item that depreciates. I never pay cash for boats and I won't buy a new one.....EVER!!! I will let some other sucker (present company excluded of course) take the huge hit for the first 3-5 years and buy a nice clean used boat at half of the price. Never pay cash for boats or planes.

I financed mine. I could have easily paid cash, but not a very wise choice from a financial standpoint. Let's see, pay 100K cash and save the 5.125% interest I'm paying on the loan or finance the 100K, invest the money, make a lot more return on my investment than the interest I'm paying on the loan.
Even after taxes, I come out ahead. It's not always about having debt, but how well you can leverage the debt to your advantage.:D

I always pay cash for toys. The only thing that I will ever finance is my homes. I do not believe that it is a smart thing to finance a depreciating asset. If you can not afford the toy, don't buy it! I guess I am just kind of gun shy about financing. I have seen too many people over extend themselves and get into BIG trouble with financing of toys. :( I owe no one anything and that is the way that I like it.
I am not saying that financing is wrong, but it is not right for me. :) I know that sometimes it is smart to leverage the financing, but I don't want to have to worry about it. With the difference in % earning on the investment and % owed on the boat, it is not worth it. Just my .02

Just bought our first boat: 24' Centurion Enzo. Paid cash, but now I'm sure it is worth 30 or 40% less than it was a month ago, when we bought it. That kind of depreciation is a solid argument for avoiding financing! I'd hate to owe a dollar for something that is worth 70 cents.

All vehicles paid off here, 4 boats, 2 PWCs and 4 cars. Just paid off the equity line as well. My company keeps laying off more and more people so I figure it's only a matter of time before I get a pink slip so I want to be as much out of debt as I can be.

LOL, it tells you somthing when a majority of the boats on this thread that are actually "owned" are under 20k... Not to many DCB owners chiming in here..;) :D
Seriously though. Financing is not a bad thing. We are going to finance our new boat because the rate is cheaper than our second on our house. We will take the equity from our current boat and pay off our second which is a higher rate than we can get on our new boat. We will save a point and a half by doing that. :)

Everything is financed. Even when you pay cash...you finance it your self, but earn no interest and give up opportunity interest when that money could be saved or invested.
And I agree....financing itself is not bad. It is just that usually the people that use financing can't afford to buy it any other way. These people are depending/betting that they have no financial hickups for the next (fill in the blank) years like loss of a job, or disability, legal issues and etc. That is a pretty big gamble in my book, especially on a depreciating cash consuming asset.

Still working on getting the Daytona running, then it may be time to work on the Tahiti. Don't you have enought other boats/pickups in your driveway that need to be restored already? ;)

That's what I dont understand with some people on here. It would not be the smartest decision in my book to not owe anything on a $250k boat and wrap all that cash up in it. You can get loans for 6.5% on that kind of money and you can make MUCH more investing that money so you are making your boat payment PLUS getting additional $$ from the investment. Almost like having the boat for free. Also if getting a boat worth as much as a house, I want to make sure I can write it off, which has been the case with every boat I have ever owned.
I have no problem saying I owe $$ on my boat. What I did have a problem saying was that I was paying $6k/year for insurance with my cat. That is wasted money and that is why you see a cruiser in my sig now. The $500/month for insurance is now only $100/month and I got a hell of a lot more boat for that $400/month extra I was paying in insurance.

Paid cash for ours. I'm not really into the big bling that requires a mortgage to own. :)

We paid cash in full for our little Jet Boat. Bought it barely used for almost half the price of a new one. I think I enjoy the boat more because it's all paid for.

I borrowed $1200 to buy my 1977 Glastron eight years ago. Technically, I suppose it isn't mine but it feels like mine since I'm the one who handed over the cashier's cheque for $1250 to the previous owner. It's going to be great when I'm done making payments in 12 years time. I'll probably go wild, upgrade the bow emblem, and maybe even change the gear case oil.
Sure, it's not much but it gets me on the lake and hey... at least it's not a jet.
My current ride cost me $400 and a six pack of beer, but I sold the motor and got $250 of it back...so I guess I still owe $150...I guess I could start selling rides...

When you have a Jag... the mechanic payment takes place of the bank payment.

port-o-potty , sink and alcohol stove [ portable coleman will do ] qualifies the boat as secondary residence , ie; vacation home.

They want to be able to see if you can live on it for 3 or 5 days (cant remember which of the 2 it was).
So water, potty, and sleeping area out of the elements.
