Deck Scoop
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently lost my engine cover (flew out the back of my truck and the boat ran it over!!) and now have the chance to have one custom made to my liking. The lid covers the whole back of the boat, so I have enough space to put whatever I want. What I am hoping for is either a fiberglass scoop built into the lid that mates with the carb through probably a carb plate, so when you lift the hatch the scoop comes up and you have just the carb ans spark arrestor on the engine, carb surrounded by the housing.
Or my other idea was to put a stainless scoop on the carb and have it just stick outside the cover, but stays on the engine when the lid is lifted.
WHat do you guys think and have anyof you done this before?? I have seen lots of pictures where this has been done but not talk about it. What type of scoop have you used? Harwood, if so drag scoop and what part numbers?? Pictures of set-up with lid down and up??
Thanks-

Just finishing a new hatch /scoop dealio for my boat . I went with the scoop incorporated with the hatch , because it rains here occasionally ;) . In Cali I would go the open hatch route with carb/scoop sticking out . The scoop I've used is the type you see on boats and drag cars . I cut the back open ,the hatch is white , scoops are black, logo in red on silver sides of the scoop .Harwood has them for around $250 us . Local dude made mine for $120 cdn :) . He made lots for the local dragstrip racers .
This picture is just a test not the final finish

Great looking scoops! You may wish to consider plugging the holes in the front and opening up holes in the back of them. Otherwise, the mechanical noise from the top end will drive your wife nuts. By the end of the day, it
usually becomes overwhelming. (i'm referring to the valve train noise that you would normally never hear. Opening them up backwards, eliminates
this noise from the people in the cockpit.

Keith , the wife got used to the noise when I had the engine box scoop forward on my 20 Spectra . She's not riding too much anymore , but my kid ,and he doesn't care :) . BTW , I'm going to make a slip cover for the scoops for the times she's on . I may make an air operated baffle for it later . We ride with earmuffs in my friend's boat , even though the engine cover is heavily insulated . Being inside of his boat is like inside of a violin :D

I have two "scoop experiences" to relate for you.
My 16' Tahiti jet with a 461 Mondelo - Olds has a Dooley aluminum scoop on the single Holley 4 barrel carb. When the scoop faces forward, you can barely hear anything else in the boat but the valve reversion noise (my best guess as to the source) coming out of the scoop. Looks cool, though it doesn't seem to provide any more top end (where a forward facing scoop should work). When the scoop is turned around backwards, the boat is much quieter in the driver's seat, and it is just as fast as when it is facing forward. It doesn't look as cool, though. Speed is 65 - 67 on GPS, 90 degrees, very small chop, Lake Havasu at 8 AM in July, bimini top ashore.
We've been shopping for a deck boat, and rode/test drove a very nice Magic with a 525 Merc and a hood scoop with a forward facing opening. I loved the boat, but the scoop radiated so much mechanical noise that I could see I would become rapidly tired of it. My Camaro stroker motor with solid lifters, solid motor mounts, camshaft gear drive, straight cut transmission gears, and 3" dual exhaust seemed quieter after just a short ride. It wasn't the "rump-rump" note of a big cam, or the pleasant ticking of the valve lash being taken up every other revolution; it was just a lot of noise. That said, it looked really cool, and boat sounded great from outside the boat.

I've only have those mild 6.2's merc makes ;) .
Passed the noise tests by several groups of people since I've got it , and no one complained about noise sitting right front of the scoops . Ambient temperature must have dropped at least 20 degrees in the engine compartment :) .

If you want to minimize the noises, put on a scoop pan and seal for the hatch to rest on. Scoop opening only needs to be the size of the pan, and the pan has a foam seal you cut to size (height) wise. You only get induction noise, air to the carb.

That's a good advise sleekcrafter. I've installed a S/S screen front and back of the scoops openings , to keep any critters out too .
