Well, here they are. The pictures below are of boat #2. The motor pictures are for Boat #1. It is a Donahue Custom Marine 510cid engine and we call it the 600/600. Roughtly 600h.p. and 600ft/lbs of torque. All with a 1 year warranty. :)

Here it is running on the dyno. 589h.p. @ 5,500 RPM's. Drop it down to 91 octane and it will do even better. It was run on 112 and low compression motors don't like high octane.

Nice looking setup. And a great setup to run. 600's are nice motors. I would say dump the valve covers, they're old school. I know your building a retro boat but some alum. DCM covers or match painted to the boat covers would be trick and add a touch more of detail.
Just a thought......

Engraved valve covers are already on their way. We just used those on the dyno. DCM Valve covers come with the motor. :)

I like # 3 with solid colours on the side . Find the stripes a bit thick in the first picture , taking the graceful lines of the hull away  .

Wow, looks great. What kind of numbers are you expecting with 600 hp in a boat that size?
I somewhat wish that Parker would impose a 24' and under limit and we could all go back to river boats. :D
My guess is low-mid 90's with this motor & XR Drive

Question?
Why would they run 110 octane in that motor on the dyno?
Wouldn't you want to know what the motor does with pump gas and if there was any kind of knock or detonation? I understand that it will make a little more hp with the lower octane but I would want my motor tested with the gas I am gonna run.
Was it a loaded dyno?

The shop that builds our motors is a 100% race shop. They have at least 4-6 800-900h.p. all aluminum small blocks in there at all times. This motor is very "basic" for them. 90% of the motors that they run are high compression motors. All that they keep there is race gas. They call pump gas "junk fuel. With the compression we are running, we can get away with 91 no problem. They just didn't have any. :(

Gotcha....maybe take a jug of 91 with you next time.
Just be nice to know what your looking at. When you throw some load on the boat (drive,hull,weight,4 peeps) and run it in 110 degree temprature it would be nice if it was turn key and dialed.
Do you think your gonna have to mess with the timing/jetting when you splash it?
Boats look amazing:D

The reason i ask is that besides the normal marine prep work to the head Iconel/guides to the Edelbrock RPM heads did you flow the heads, etc.
I just built a 540 stroker and 9.5 compression using the Arizona Speed and marine kit, but substituted it with a FAST ECU.
The motor was a bitch to get tuned on the dyno and i pulled 605 hp, but the torque started to fall off at 5300rpm. But since this was on a dyno with no load such as drive and pulleys, i will have to take one more session with the guys on the computers on the lake.
My heads were stock, just wondering what else i could get if i did any head work after the season. Going up this weekend to put the motor back in the boat.
By the way that momo did what you expected on the dyno, that is all ways a relief. Any oil leaks ect. How many hours did you spend on the dyno?
thanks.

Very nice. I love the classic lines of this boat. It was cool 20 years ago and it's still cool today! Genesis is laying down some really nice gels too. Best of luck to you.

Nope. The company has built several of these 600/600's, just none for marine use. They know exactly what the setup is and it is setup between 34-35 degrees of timing. Also, on the dyno we set it up slightly lean. Boat exhausts are ALWAYS more restrictive than a dyno exhaust. With the back pressure going up, it will fatten the motor up slightly. That is why we did it. :) We should be able to drop the motor into the boat, set the idle, and go. :)

Coming along nice. Congrats.
What is the compression for that motor? If that boat will run in the 90's that is right on.... good combo right there.
I agree, those valve covers kill the look for the motor and it's good to know your getting some DCM ones made up.
Thanks for the updates... and I really like #2 - I am curious to see how the finished product will be.

1) According to the guy who put the engine together, the heads are CNC heads. Knowing the builder, I would not be a bit surprized if they put them on the flow bench.
2) Our torque started falling off after 3500rpm's. It had 647ft/lbs of torque.
3) Dynos are great for tuning a motor, but they are 100% backwards from a boat. A boat has load on it the most on the bottom end. Once you get going, the boat is not pushing anymore, just maintaining. Dynos bring up the RPM's then crank on the load. It is always a sticky situation. That is why I turn to the professionals. :)
4) Don't know what else you could get out of your heads. Porting and polishing does quite a bit, but I don't know exactly how much. According to our builder, our motors can easily do over 600h.p. and still be real mild. A 540 stroker should be able to make that pretty easily. :)
5) Momo???
6) No leaks what so ever. :) Everything went perfect.
7) Since this motor has already been built before, they had a great baseline for where to setup the motor. I believe that they did 6-7 pulls (2 while I was there).

Maybe you are correct. I do not know. That is what we are guessing. The last test that HB did the boat ran 69.8mph with 365h.p. The only modification to the drive package was a nose cone. We are adding another 200h.p. :) Maybe it will run the #'s maybe it won't. We will see. Any way you look at it, it is going to be fun trying to see what it can do. :) :D

How much HP do you think you are going to loose when its boat dressed?
Sea pump 25-30
Alternator 10-15
P.S. Pump 10-15
Boat Headers 50
And then the 40 hp for the Bravo XR.
Would it have been far too difficult to dyno the engine dressed for the boat?

I think that an awesome setup would be one of these boats with either twin 2.5's or twin 300's. Definitely a rocket ship that can handle some big water. :)
Also, chances are boat #6-7 is going to be a jet with a set back pump and one of our 750's in it. :) That would be an awesome lower river boat! :) :) :)

I was just browsing through a 1979 issue of Custom Boat & Engine where they described the 20' Howard daycruiser as the worlds fastest! Larry Minor drove his blown v-drive cruiser to 3 consecutive 100 mph runs. The fastest was 110.30. All of these runs were at the Blue Water family drags in Parker, AZ. Now there's a good starting point!:D

I have taken some time off from the boat...but the good news is that there are 2 new 454's under the hood. I also swapped out the old mer-trans's and added a pair of velvet drives. Slowly but surely! I have the exhaust, and wiring, just need new reverse rotation starters and new distributers. It's not too far away.
