I just picked up an old Maha. It's not in bad shape but it has seen better days.
Has anyone refinished one of these?
What kind of "varnish" did you use?
How many coats?
Did you remove all the hardware?
I am very excited about the ski. I could have picked up an off-the-shelf newer ski that would do everything just fine but I was looking for cruiser that has some character.

My Dad had a Taperflex that was Bud labels on the top. I sorta inherited it when they stopped going to the river. I lost it on a trip upriver over 20 years ago. Maybe somewhere in the gorge. maybe near Topock, I don't know. Wish I had that thing back just for the cool factor.

The Maha website suggests only spot-refinishing to avoid losing rigidity. It also recommends an exterior urathain-based product.
The handle dings aren't too bad, although I will touch them up. I just want to make sure the edges and the tale are sealed to avoid further damage to the wood.

Hate to admit I have skied on nothing else except my Maha 2001 (Maha's fiberglass performance slalom entry) since 1985.
Found it on the side of the River road by the public ramp south of the keys. It's part of the family now. It's seen more beach starts at the Moonridge launch ramp than many of your boats have been to the river. :D

Send it back up to Bob (owner of Maha). He will make it look like new for a couple of bucks.

This maha is retiered and hanging in my garage:D , got for my 18th birthday in 1974 and that was the ski to have back in those days, I refinished it a few times with a urathane based clear and it seemed to hold up well.

I have three wood Mahas. Was wondering the same thing. One is a flat bottom. Yea, I'm old too:)

Yep I still have my custom made Brad ski it's a work of art. made in 1981. My friend tryed to refinish his Brad and F'd it all up. I think if I was you, I'd pay to have it done, or just leave it alone.

I have refinished several wood Maha's through the years. They were originally finiched with resin. I would sand it down and apply catlalysed resin and then wetsand with 600 grit paper. Buff with rubbing compound and it will look like the day it was built...

Thanks for all the help. I will probably just spot sand and refinish. Is there a particulare type of resin or clearcoat that works best and is relatively easy to work with?
Thanks again,
Rodney
