View Full Version : A/C Guys Does Size Matter.............

Now that I have your Attention:
I am going to finally put A/C in the Havi Boat House/ Garage 34X50X10. I’m strongly leaning towards using one of the “Ductless Mini Split Systems” unless I uncover something to steer me away from them before I pull the trigger.
I have couple of questions:
1. Do I go with the new SEER 21 over SEER13 units, is it worth the extra cash$$ almost double on some size units.
2. If anyone is familiarly with these units, should I install the inside unit on my back wall or center it on the ceiling.
3. HereÂ’s the big question do I install 2 smaller BTU units (12000 to 24000) or one larger BTU unit (36000 to 60000).
I like the smaller two unit deal, cuz IÂ’m all about redundancy unless thereÂ’s some other factor IÂ’m not considering.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
-Brian

The high the seer the better. But figue on 2 ton for every 1,000 sguare feet. So for this you will need to have 3 ton. Now what size other than seer is this unit?

I was thinking 2 1-Ton units 12000 to 18000 btu in size. Total cost about 2200.00 dollars.
Also i'm not trying to cool my boat house down to 72 dezgrez 75-78 is fine with me.

Whether to go with one or two units is personal preference. I think if it were me, I would set up two units in my garage. As for efficiency, everyone will have an opinion on this. Some informed, some not so much. The cost of equipment for 18+ seer equipment is waaayyyyyyy more to purchase than 13 seer. Payback on that is a long time. 10+ years depending on how often you use it. You can get cooling cost comparison charts on line and make a decision if you think it's worth it. Unless you use it all year long, many hours a day, the payback just isn't there. Save the two thousand extra dollars you would spend on equipment and use it for boat gas:D

I put a swamp cooler on top of my RV garage which I hardly use. I bought a portable swamp cooler that hooks up to my garden hose for about $500 that I use all the time when I'm watching TV out in the garage.

I've had the portable swampee for a couple years now don't like the maintenance on it, or the added work to the boat when it blows out all of the white shit.

I haven't had those problems at all. Knock on wood. :)

Had I known about these Ductless Mini Split Systems 2 years ago, when I bought my portable swampee, well I wouldnÂ’t be asking questions now.

This sound's good. I went from a 12 seer to a 19 1/2 on my house, with a 2 speed fan. It doesn't work near as hard as the old 12 seer did. And I did notice a bigh change in $$$$$ on my bill. And I keep my house at 75, I like it cool.

That's cool, and just the kind of input I wanted to hear.
Is your 19 seer the new inverter technology?

The mini split systems work great :D
as a std. rule of thumb for my houses I use 1 ton per 400sq ft..and 1 ton per 500 sq ft of garage. so 3-1/2 ton for your garage.
as far as 12 vs. 13 seer, yes 13 is more efficient and as of 1/1/07 we are required to install 13 seer or better into "new home construction"...but for the amount you will be using it save your money and go with the 12 seer, because it will take "decades" of running the 12 for you make up the cost of the 13. ;)

I got a 2000 sq foot garage and a large swamp that keeps it at 80 when it was a 110 last weekend. Have you researched all swamps? There's alot to making your swamp work with the way air comes in and exits the right way. I had 8 up ducts installed and that was not enough. I crack one of the garage doors about 2" and was amazed at how much better it worked. I will say this, next time I would maybe install another to freeze your nuts off. :D

I think Swamps are great when there new, but after a couple of years they become a maintenance night mare.

I think the new inverter technology A/C units are very close to being as cost effective as a swamp coolers.

Two 2ton mini split units 18 SEER equip. cost 3000.00 I would research
the evap coolers a little more though, I think the added humidity it provides
would be good for anything that you keep in there.

I think this and the other thread have some good a/c info, but dam what is up with 3&4-ton systems my 1700sf house only has 2.5 ton heat pump and we are always turning that thing down.

I am a real believer in fans also ceiling or wall mount keeping the air moving can save on how much need to run the A/C

The Ceiling Fans maybe the Kicker. We have them in every room of the house, but I didnÂ’t think of them for the Boat House.

You want to keep it 75-78 when its 110 outside, also you have a 10 ft.
ceiling. I assume everything is very well insulated including the garage
door. There is no way you would get those temps with a 2ton unit, it
would just run and never shut off.

House insulated very well, boat house attic was finished this past winter with 6in of R30, garage doors have 2 1/2 in of styrene in them, I installed that a couple years ago.
My 2.5 ton will start huffing when i open up my aux register for cooling entire 3000 plus sf.

The one real plus for the wall mount fans if this going to be a shop/garage never need to worry about clearance if ever needed.Wall mounted ones oscillate, two or three of those can move alot of air and IMO will be very happy you invested in them the payback will be immediate. Have a safe 4th:)
