Some guy wearing a backpack, probably full of bricks, looked like he wanted to end his life by jumping of the bridge. Police had the road blocked and a couple patrol boats below. Anyone know if he jumped or police got him?

Man threatens to jump off bridge
By DAVID BELL
Wednesday, July 4, 2007 10:55 PM MST
A man who threatened to commit suicide by jumping from the London Bridge was talked off the ledge by police after almost an hour's negotiation Wednesday.
Lake Havasu City Police officers were able to convince the unidentified white male to surrender without incident or major injury.
“He was a distraught transient that had a knife and said he wanted to kill himself,” sad Police Lt. Dough Whitaker.
The man climbed over the railing on the south face of the bridge at the centermost point at about 3:50 p.m. When originally approached by an officer, the man reportedly injured himself slightly with the knife, prompting the call to close the bridge to traffic at both ends and send in the police negotiator to talk the man down.
Underneath the bridge Lake Havasu City Police Boats cordoned off the Bridgewater Channel area under the man. They were assisted by boats from Mohave County and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Offices as well as SBCSO deputies on personal watercraft.
At about 4:32 the Police were able to convince the man to come off the ledge and he was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
Whitaker said he was pleased the incident ended without a major injury or death. “This one came out well.”
Court TV filmed the incident from the SBCSO boat, part of the “Party Patrol” reality television series broadcast on the station.
Prior to the incident on the London Bridge, law enforcement agencies reported a very calm July Fourth holiday on the lake.
”It was kind of quiet, more like a typical weekend,” Whitaker said.
SBCSO Sgt. Jim Train said his agency hadn't made an arrest through 3:30 Wednesday.
“It's been slow,” Train said. “I think people are finally starting to get the message and have a designated operator.”
MCSO Sgt. Doug Shuster said it had been equally slow on the Arizona side of Lake Havasu. And, he said, that's a very good thing.
“The heat's been brutal but everyone we contact has been very well behaved, very family oriented,” Shuster said.
Since Saturday MCSO has responded to just one property damage incident and there have been no injury incidents.
“I can't say if that will hold through this coming weekend, but if it does we're all in very good shape,” Shuster said.
Lake Havasu City Fire Department Personnel, monitoring the carbon monoxide levels in the Bridgewater Channel did raise the warning to “unhealthy” because of the lack of breeze. However, the levels never rose to the point of forcing a closure of the Channel.
With reports coming in of temperatures climbing over 121 degrees, agencies wondered if it was the heat keeping people away from the Channel and the lake.
“Who knows, maybe the weather is keeping the people in,” said Whitaker.
None of the agencies reported responding to heat related injuries until a call came in at about 6:15 p.m. at London Bridge Beach Park. Lake Havasu City Fire boat also responded to Copper Canyon at 5:50 p.m. for reports of a possible alcohol poisoning. Once they arrived though, they found the reporting party had already left the area.

about 15 or so years ago....I jumped off the bridge on a weekday....it was myself and about 4-5 locals. We kept watch for underpassing boats for eachother. I did hit the bottom, but I weighted about 115lbs at the time, so it was like a sheet of paper in the wind :D I'm sure i'd break somethin if i did that today. We also used to set up a jump on the south side/island side of the bridge and jump out bikes into the channel.
I am sure you would be hung by your thumbs for tryin any of the above today...so I dont condone it. ;)

And That is exactly what we did. We just made it to the beach area by the Island Market prior to the police shutting down the channel. Everyone was watching and not doing much else. No partying, no stereos thumping, just kind of quiet. So, I cranked up the stereo and moved on with my life.
I am glad they talked him back over rail of the bridge. I didn't feel like watching someone try to kill themselves on our Country's B-Day.:D

I think people attempting suicide in public has to be my pet peeve #11. If people are going to commit suicide then just do it. Those that are serious do and they usually don't need an audience unlike that bum.

I watched a kid jump once. He did it off a water tower. It was at a militarty school where I spent the 10th grade.
I bet it's safe to say that all the people here that are saying they wished he would have done it have never seen someone do it.
I will never forget that for the rest of my life.

Maybe he realized that the bridge was not tall enough, or the water deep enough to succeed.
He'd have better off renting a PWC and weaving around out on the lake.
I have sympathy for people that suffer from this, seen it happen before. One psuedo-friend was successful by parking his Beemer on the RR tracks :( I'd seen him laughing half a day before that fateful moment. :( One never knows.
