Paging RODNJEN re:2500 HD/6.0/allison

I wanted to get input on the Chev 2500HD powered by the 6.0 and the 6spd Allison. I know the Duramax is a better platform, but the exhaust fumes make me sick. I sold my 04 6.6 because of it. What kind of mileage do you get empty, towing and how does it tow? Any exhaust or aircleaner modifications? I know all about the harsh ride! Thanks!

Do you mean the 8.1? I don't believe you can get the 6.0 with an Allison, can you? If you're going to tow with a gasser you definitely should get the 8.1. SigePMock had a 6.0 and did everything under the sun to it including a Whipple Blower and he still didn't sound very happy with the power.

I was told that the 5.3 does better than that pig of a 6.0. Something about shifting a bunch and trying to find it's sweet spot. And he was getting about 10mpg, he hated it.

6.0 does not come with the Allison.The 8.1 is not made anymore you would have to buy used.As for toweing the 6.0 with 4:10s does great. I pulla 26' ww
8250 dry. loaded no problems with an 03 3/4 burb lifted w/315 tires and 6" cst lift.

So the 6spd advertised as standard equipment is not the Allison? That's a deal breaker for me. Thanks!

The standard 6 speed is the Tow/Haul Hydramatic. Don't know if you can get the Allison with the 6.0 but I'm sure Photoglou would know.

The previous post is correct. The 8.1/Allison isn't offered anymore, but a 360HP 6.0 with a 6 speed hydramatic is.
I was initially interested getting the 6 liter when I recently ordered a truck, but I couldn't get any idea what the mileage was going to be and decided to go diesel for a lot of other reasons.
That 6 liter is pretty stout. I would still consider it if the diesel was out of your price range or you were going to travel a lot in Mexico and didn't need the torque of the diesel.

As stated above the 6sp behind the GAS 6.0 is NOT an Allison Trans. It's a new self splitting Hydramatic that applies clutches in multiple different packs to make 6 speeds. Technology that has actually been around a while just now being used thanks to electronics making things more user friendly.
Std trans behind the 2500HD with the 6.0 Gas. Not available in any 1500 or so I read.
With that trans and active fuel management that new 6.0 combo will be good for at least 11 mpg.:)
I have a 2004 6.0 in my 2500 HD 2wd ext cab, LB and its a DOG even with 4:10 gears. THE MILAGE IS ON PAR WITH A 1974 454 IN A BIG DUALLY. Not an impressive engine but for gas and GM its all you get now.

That would be a 1/2 ton.................... 5.3 is a small block V8, I don't think they put those in 3/4 tons?:idea:

My buddy had the 6.0 and sold it 6 months later. He had a 26' ww and dogged it to the desert + horrible fuel mileage. Traded it for a duramax diesel and would never go back. Complained about the tranny as well, never quite shifting when towing.

Duramax with ally is the only way to go! I plan on buying something from Jay in a few. Call him! He will hook you up without the B.S. I spoke to him a few nights ago and he suprised the hell out of me with my current conditions.
