We just watched from Netflix " Allman Brothers Band, Live at the Beacon". pretty good but some of the new stuff was, well, boring. Now the older stuff rocks but as with all living things I would not have recognized Greg Allman, the aging process is very unkind, I prefer to remember him as he was 30 years ago, sort of like I feel about myself ;) Its funny how I am retreating to oldies more so now because all (not all but most) the groups today are sounding alike and just not my taste. This guy named Denny Somach came on the Howard Sten show and presented a bunch of examples.
http://www.classicrockcentral.com/classic_rock_infocus.cfm
I can forward you the show if you want to listen. It is actually pretty fascinating.
Denny Somach Talks About Led Zeppelin Possibly Ripping Off Songs. 06/27/07. 9:10am
After the break we heard a prank call that the Touch Tone Terrorist guy made to High Pitch Eric asking him if he'd do some gay porn. We also heard a ''I Love Droppin Loads'' song parody. Howard came back as Fred was playing Bruce Springsteen's ''Jersey Girl.''
Howard said that Sal made a new prank call to a pizza place where he gives a last name that never ends. He quickly played that call where Sal just keeps going on and on with letter after letter in his last name... ''Trankyftrkpca.. rw3enca'' and on and on. He eventually gives him the last letter of O which was ''Oh man are you ****in stupid.''
Howard said this next guest, Denny Somach, is a guy he used to worship. he used to program a radio station that he wanted to be on years ago. he said he knows all kinds of radio information that he doesn't even know. He asked Denny when he got involved in the radio business. Denny said he was about 17 or 18. He went on to talk about some of the shows he used to produce in the years past. He mentioned a bunch of popular shows he used to produce and mentioned that he was asked to do a thing for Howard Stern back when he was at WNBC. Howard said he wanted to get his show syndicated back then but they ended up taking his idea and gave it to Soupy Sales instead. He said he flipped out on them about that. Denny said that they told him that he went and worked on a special for Howard to get him the syndicated show but it was the week he got fired. He said that they were going to go through with it up until he got fired.
Howard gave Denny a plug for his web site ClassicRockCentral.com and Denny said that he had all of this stuff they were about to talk about up on the site if the audience wanted to follow along. Howard said that Denny was going to show them some examples of how it appears that Led Zeppelin stole almost every one of their songs from other bands. They took credit for writing those songs for years but now Atlantic Records has started crediting the original writers on their latest Greatest Hits album.
Howard had Denny present them the evidence. the first song was ''Babe I'm Gonna Leave You'' which may have been ripped off from Joan Baez's performance of an Anne Bredon song. Howard played the original song and then the Led Zeppelin song which was very similar. Fred said that he read the lyrics and it does look like they stole the songs word for word.
Howard played both songs and listened to how similar they were. Of course the Zeppelin stuff was rockin' while the Joan Baez was pretty mellow. Howard took a call from a guy who said that this stuff had changed his opinion of the band now.
Howard went to the next song ''Dazed and Confused.'' Howard played a Jake Holmes song which was the one that appears to have been ripped off by Zeppelin. Howard played the Zeppelin cover of the song and it was like a direct rip off. Denny said he had a story about Jake Holmes to tell too. He said that Jake said that 17 years went by before he found out about this. He said that Jake was an unknown person and he had gone into the jingle business and wrote the ''Be All You Can Be'' jingle for the Army and some other things. Jake was also in a comedy trio with Joan Rivers for a while. He got out of the music business for a while and didn't know about the song being ripped off. He said that The Yardbirds are back together and perform the song but they do give Jake credit now.
Howard moved on to the next song which was a rip off of ''Blackwater Side'' which was changed to ''Black Mountain Side.'' Fred asked if it's possible that even the other performers didn't write those songs. Denny said it's possible but they should have had a disclaimer on the songs if that was the case.
Howard played a few more clips of examples of riffs that could have been ripped off. There were many examples that sounded like songs that could have been ripped off. One of them was the ''Stairway to Heaven'' opening that appeared to be ripped off from another band. It was a good cover of the song but they were just doing the originals better.
A caller said that this is awful for Jimmy Paige because he's such a great guitarist. He said that it's just wrong to make these guys look bad because there are other bands that covered old songs. Howard said that bands like The Beatles would credit the other guys that they covered.
Denny said that he was there today to pitch a show idea to Tim Sabean. He wants to cover this stuff on some shows. Vinnie Favale called in and suggested some other songs that they could use but they didn't have them all ready to listen to. Howard thanked Vinnie for calling but told him that he's sucking in too many bus fumes.
Howard told Denny he had to wrap things up. Denny asked Howard if he knew where he was 30 years ago today. Denny said that he knew that Howard was actually at a Zeppelin concert with Ted Utz and he tracked down his ticket stub. Howard said that's right. He remembered going to the concert and leaving early. Even 30 years ago he was leaving events early. Howard wrapped up a short time later and went to break.

I don't know SoCal. There is 3 songs that are similar. In my eyes it does not discredit Led Zeppelin entirely. To be honest, Denny Somach is pointing out the obvious. I have seen other songs in other genres that awfully similar as well. Not only that, Howard is a funny guy on the air and from what I remember, was a big Zeppelin fan. But I don't think he was any music facts authority like say Uncle Joe Benson on KLOS. I don't see Howard taking this guy too serious. Frankly neither would I. Interesting reading tho. Thanks for sharing.

Nothing like a little Creedence!
CCR is the best chill music when out on the boat. And I'm a young guy!
(Sublime is second)
Definitely CCR.
I got my first boat at 20 in 1992, and Creedence has always been my floating choice. I made a mix tape just for that purpose back then.
About 6 years back, right after child #1, I cut a CD called "River Relaxin'" and it was mostly CCR and Lionel Richie, and that was the last of my thinking about river music.
I don't play much music these days. I'm either with the kids on the sand bar or in transit not listening to anything, listening to someone else's too loud stuff, or actually relaxing with the wife having a conversation alone for once.
But you definitely have to have some CCR in the mix.
