Where did that come from? My parents met there back in 72 (that's why I was born in 73). My mom graduated from Havasu. I have a lot of family from there back in those days. If someone knows where that came from, please pm/email me. I would love to drop some names and see if you remember them. Thanks.

Damn,
In '66 my friend Roger Whipp built some boats just like that red one with some of the earliest Berkeley Jets out on the lakes. Sadly, that mold was just destroyed on a few years ago.
I owned that boat until about 1988.
You could pretty much repeat that scene at Shasta, and I suspect many other CA lakes.
Thanks for the vid.
Jim.

Most of that was taken from the Cali side (you can see Havasu city in the background) the launch ramp was Havasu Landing. really cool vid.

I lived in Havasu every summer from 1969-1972 I graduated from Colton High school in "72" although we had a mobile home next to the old airport i stayed with the Lutzs, Todd Peters, Larry Grezowski, and Gary Beemer. 1971 was the first year of the new high school, no more commuting to Kingman.
Mondales was the only place to hang out, use to toss ole salvo tablets into the waterfall, dances were at the woods building... Yes those were the days.
Use to fly in on ole Bonanza airlines. Cops didn’t care if you drove unregistered vehicles etc. god forbid you were a guest of McCulloch.
Owned a 15’ 1963 yellow and black Schiada outboard flatbottom W/85 hp merc.
Yes those were the days
Also beware I just bought a scanner…. Pics forth coming

Man, I love that old stuff. I was 16 in '72 and was more into hot rods (American Grafitti came out in '72) but the scene is the same. The thing that stands out the most to me is everyone is happy and having a good time. No one is trying to be a bad azz / hard azz. No pumped up, tatted up, pierced up gangster wannabes. WTF happened to us all? Oh, and no launch ramp drama either! :D

This also reminded me of the movie, "Dazed and Confused". If your a 70's guy you gotta see this movie. They nailed the period perfectly and it's a funny movie.

Very cool, it seemed like a much simpler & less stressfull time. No large boats, no huge wakes, no launch ramp drama etc....
Seemed like family, friends camping & sharing each others good company..

Classic...
It's hard to explain what Havasu was like back then when you look at it now because it's like two different worlds. My disgust for what it has become is overshadowed 100 times by the memories from back in the 70's. You could cruise the channel any day of the week and be lucky to see another boat. The Sandbar was only for those brave enough to venture up the gorge. (And there weren't many!)
My friends and I came to the conclusion that it was a lack of technology that made Havasu special. I mean, if you wanted to go there you had to travel 300 miles or more in 100 degree heat. No small feat in a 70's rig towing a boat, or a camper...or both as we did. All in a Chevy truck with a 350. Had to turn off the A/C on hills and get fried. And the boats of yesteryear made Havasu seem 100 miles long in any direction. Everyone had either a 4 banger tri-hull like us or a jetboat that cruised at 30mph. People may think it's bitchin to run from the springs to the channel in 3 minutes, but to me it's not. You're missing out on what it's all about. It used to take us all day to get from Crazy Horse to Topock and back. And that was just fine with us...:D

In 1972, I was 11 and my brother was 10 when we got our first boat...18 foot aluminum canoe. We would paddle around the Island in a few hours.
Try that today on a weekend:eek:

We cruised up to Topock just to seek cooler water, then to Havasu Landing at night to party with the bands..
We loaded up my 15'er with 6 guys and didn’t have a worry in the world
Today: OMG i forgot my cell phone, condoms, and 8 million watt rechargeable light. # 1000 bullfrog, no bottle water we drank right out of the lake, Skiied naked thus the name on my boat at the time.. Runnin' Bare"
the chicks were difficult to lay... the drinking age in Az wa 19 and when the Pub opened we was the only classy place to get wasted!!
Yes they were simpler times, only two ramps and I never remember waiting to launch.
Havasu had just two doctors on call, no hospital (I should know ;) )
Ahhh the parties the locals had, I remember I working at that restaurant across from the theater with the straw on the floors (Forgot the name)
Anyway thanks for the memories of 1972
Mark
