07-18-2007, 09:20 AM
The best place to watch from the water is right outside the breakwater at the start, and back towards the Coast Hotel for the finish, I'm watching from the turn in Avalon this year, i've never seen the race from that side. I'll miss the finish but it'll be nice to see it from another perspective.

Either the fan tail of the Queen Mary or you can head down past the heliport (Island Hopers) and head down the rocks you can get pretty close to the breakwater. Bring a pair of binocs though and a camera that has a nice amount of zoom.

The hotel is right before the Queen Mary. You'll be able to see the boats as they come roaring down the channel to the finish line. There's a grassy area in front of the hotel that everyone sits at. There are a few vendors, a beer & mixed drink stand too. We always bring a cooler with some drinks. Get there early, parking can be a bitch.

The finish line is off the stern of the Queen Mary this year... the channel is too shallow for the traditional finish line and will be used as the deceleration area per the Harbor Patrol and Coast Guard. Boats will be at idle by the time they get to the Coast Hotel. The Coast jumbo screen will give the best view and most detail of the entire race. After scouting all the potential camera angles for the live show, the best land based viewing area for the start and finish will be the boardwalk area on the Shoreline Village peninsula on the other side from the Queen Mary. To see the boats at speed head out onto the frontage road, past the Queen Mary, toward the breakwall. Watching from a boat is best on the east side of the channel, with the sun at your back. Be prepared to get roughed up pretty good as the boats scream by unless you are on a huge yacht. Watching from shore at Catalina is weak at best. Turn boat is pretty far out there, bring good binoculars. Just my .02

You will have to be there tomorrow night to find parking...:D The race starts at around 8:30, I would say get there around 7:30ish to see the pre-race line up, and then you can follow everyone to go watch the start too. You won't get lost finding your way to the "Billygoat Trail".

Two things:
1) Is there anything going on at the hotel tomorrow? Boats to see etc.? kid friendly stuff?
2) The city of LB runs water ferries to the Queen Mary so maybe you could avoid the parking down there. The service times might not work out though. check here http://www.lbtransit.com/schedules/pdf/aqua_map_schedule_summer_07.pdf
I just called and they said it is regular service even though the race is going on.

If you get there early enough (around 7am, maybe a little before) you can see the boats before they launch. It takes quite a while to get all the big boats launched, so they will be starting about an hour before the race. After the race is done some of the boats go into the slips right in front of the Coast Hotel. There are mini-bars set up out side, a Jumbotron (sp?), and they usually have a couple vendors out there as well. It is a great time.

When are you coming into town?
I will be in tonight. Towing one boat from Havasu, another from Huntington and another from San Clemente. I plan on sleeping again Monday sometime!

Anyone know how the fog was this morning? It was pretty thick inland, just wondering about the coast.

At 5am in Huntington Beach there was no fog. Looked like the usual marine layer. Obviously not sure about offshore. Anyone on the water this morning?

Larry from E-ticket and I would like to come down with a boat or two and check out the race. We're not planning on putting them in the water we'd like to hang out on land, anyone know a good area where we could hang/park with the boats and still view the race start and finish. I have tried calling the Ski Race coordinators with no phone call back and tried speaking with the hotel and they just said there packed. If anyone has any ideas where we could hang out that would be an awesome help.
Thanks John

The race boats are pitted in that parkway behind the Yardhouse. Maybe call one of the POPRA guys and see if they have space. Why aren't you splashing the boats?

Ya I thought about splashing them, but when you splash them it doesn't really allow the oppurtunity to chat with other boaters and event spectators etc. I just want to go and hang out, meet people see what its all about and bring a boat along to show off.
Thanks John

Made a quick stop for new tires and then I am off to the LBC. I figure on pulling into the slip around midnight. Kim, John and I want to wish everyone all the best of luck and are looking forward to another great safe ski race and Rum Run. A big huge thank you to those whom set up both the Catalina Ski Race and the Rum Run. We have not taken for granted the hard work and energy that allows us all to enjoy such a weekend.
This year we are very proud to run the pace boat and look forward to seeing old friends and new...
its time to hit the road... See you all in 7 hours!

Went down today and a lot of equipment rolling into the grass area. Team CRC looks like he is ready. Teaque was there in a silver Skater that was on a tilt trailer. I know I should had my camera!
