1. TJ 1997 and above!!!
These models do not have leaf springs and ride much better with coil springs.
A nice 3 inch lift kit is pretty easy to put on and not to much $$$.
The four cylinder is ok with a stick only. On the trails you use the gears for power not the engine. The six is better on the highway!

Everything got better in '97.
Electrical, fuel system, quite a few improvements.

You can get a nice 99' Warngler for that Sport, auto, air, etc. i got one 1 1/2 years ago for 11K, only 77K miles. Hardtop, dana axles. Runs perfect today. I keep it in the Havasu garage.

Rick, you should give Jeff a call. Do you have his #? If not, I'll PM it to you or you can get it from Tom. BTW, he finished the race last weekend in 11th place. Had some coil issues during the first lap. Shut us down for 8 minutes. :(

I have a 2000 6 cylinder sport for sale with 90500 miles on it. It was a special order with 4:10 gears, and a Dana 44 rear axle. I absoloulty love it, but we have our 3rd baby on the way, so I am @ a loss. It also has both hard and soft tops, A/C, auto, cc, tilt, ps, sound bar, and new tires. Everything on this is bone stock, with the exception of the 31" tires. There is nothing wrong with it @ all, and it will make its new owner very happy. I am looking to get 9k out of it.
PM me if you want my #, and more details.

I like the old school jeeps, 78 CJ7 with a 304 and TH400 auto, rough ride, classic looks, fun to drive...or go old man..97+ If I were to buy a newer one I would go Rubicon, Danas, lockers front and rear, 4:1 crawl, great ride, plenty of power when geared, chipped and a few other minor mods....hard top, auto and air...go play then drive it home in comfort..Waiting for a 5.7 hemi conversion soon.....

$10,000 gets you a lot of Jeep.
The one above seems a fair deal.
TJ 97 later as suggested, but making big motor mods is a pain in the newer ones, I doubt you would try what we did.
YJ's all years is the best deal for your money currently. Jeeps ride waves of value. I watched CJ 7's going for cheap in the 90's because everyone wanted CJ 5's now CJ 7 seemed to be over priced. I don't buy into the coils are better thing. The coil suspension is nice but has a few down sides. If not lifted properly you can get all sorts of handling issues. Leaf springs are easy, and contrary to what you read on here, I have a leaf spring front suspension buggy that will out perform any TJ. Fast or slow.
It all depends what you want to do with the Jeep Rick, Mall crawler get a TJ and bolt on all the aftermarket crap you want. If you want to really go wheeling you might consider something older with really good running gear, like BBdogs. The TJ axles are weak at best, but so are most all the stock Jeep axles. Rubicon 44's are over rated as they are a hybred 44 and 30 on the front so the outter's are still fairly weak.
I race a 1999 TJ with the 6cyl, and 33" tires. we have on a modified version of the Rubicon Express Long arm Unlimited suspension, and King triple bypass shocks. Best I have been able to do across open desert is 68.8 MPH. My Buggy with Leaf springs on the front no by passes and a V8, can get about 80 MPH.:D
Call me Rick If you need anything.

Might want to consider a Toyota Land Cruiser, for 10k you could get a 96-97 with factory lockers. These are tanks and by far the best TLC's made. Most have yet to see the dirt, plus they can hold up to 7 peeps and still tow 5k. Any unlike a jeep they are very very reliable.

Thanks for all the replies. Guess I should have stated, I want to cruise around Havi, do some light off roading, (trails), Baja into town vehicle, tow behind the rig occasionaly and sometimes parts runner.
I test drove a few and the 99 I drove today was ALL over the road. The guy kept trying to tell me thats the way Jeeps are. I call B.S.! :D This thing has some BIG issues with handling. I tried a manual 4 cylinder...not too bad..I like auto & 6 cyl better but, why don't they come with lockers? or do they?

You can get aftermarket lockers. I'm running an OX Locker in the front and a Detroit in the rear w/ 4.56 gears. Pretty easy install.

Yep after 3 CJ's and 3 TJ's I made the switch to a 97 TLC with factory lockers. Lots of up side over the jeep ( Power, room ride) but nothing beats at day on the trail with the top off and you cant do that in TLC without a cutsall :D

A friend of mine bought a Rubicon Unlimited for about $19k (so he says???). Rubicons come with lockers front and rear, four wheel disks and a few other goodies, stock.
However, as SW posted above the 44's it comes with are not TRUE 44's. However, for what it sounds like you are using it for you shouldn't have a problem with it.

Our 2004 is perfect for average use. It would do things that will scare the s#%t out of you and drive down the highway at 80 no problem.
This sport was going to be traded yesterday for a new GMC 4X4 with the new 0.0 interest, but I just couldn't do it. It's to much fun.:D

Yeah, until the head gasket blows on you. I owned an 80 series cruiser and will never buy another one. Dont get me wrong, I loved it but I can never have confidence in another one after the head gasket blew in mine and then finding out how common of a problem it is. Major, major weak point!
Plus they arent that reliable. I never want to see another birfield joint as long as I live.

Sounds like a TJ with a hard top is what you need Rick. I would stick with a 32" tire or under. This is as long as you keep to the Light wheeling part of your discription. A rubicon would be fine for what you want to do. I would love to get ahold of an Unlimited Rubicon stick some 32" BFG AT's and call it good. Keep the lift down. Look at the relationship of the Tie Rod and drag link. They should be as close to the same angle as possible to keep the bump steer at bay. I have seen people do crazy stuff to the TJ to get big tires under it. Sway bars and panhard bars need to be on the car if you wanna drive around town.
As far as lockers, I would suggest a selectable locker. I am a big cheerleader of ARB air lockers, that has been my first choice for over 15 years. Detroits and lunch box lockers get hairy on the street when the roads are wet or in snow. Limited slip might be good enough for what you plan to do.
The Ox locker is selectable, but I have no experience with it. Some people have had bad luck with ARB, but I have had nothing but good, and I beat on my cars pretty hard. ARB customer service is outstanding.
Now I gotta pimp my buddy.:D

We have a 05 Rubi Unlimited and it has been great. We have had our jeep places in stock form that give a good pucker factor. Especially for the money.
It depends on what you want to do with it but for us the Rubicon package was worth the cost. In two+ years and allot of trail use nothing has failed.
We just go back from a 4 day Pismo trip. Would not be the same without our Jeep.
Something we will have for along time to come.
One note: We have the 6sp and I might reconsider that choice. A real grumpy trans to put it mildly.

I took a ride with Todd a while back and was amazed at how his Rubicon unlimited handles, even with 2 1/2" lift it felt like a car going down the road, and I know how they perform offroad. 10,000 does buy alot of jeep, I have around 4,000 in my 86 CJ-7, it's bouncy and all over the road....but I knda like it, it rides like every old jeep I've ever driven.

If you are looking at Tj's the 4.0l are bullitproof. But at at around 90k-110k miles they all preety much need a new radiator and exhaust manifold (they crack) thats really their only weekness.
For price comparison I bought this one a couple of years ago for $8k with factory hardtop and doors, A/c, but, with the weak axles.
They are alot of fun but I sure wouldn't want a long commute in one every day.

We have been staying away from truckhaven for the most part because the secret got about how great it was. It seems a little crowded nowadays.
You can get yourself into all kinds of trouble out there. TDS safari used to be a blast out there but I don't see them moving it back any time soon.
Talk Angie into a trip out there, sounds like fun. I spend most of my Offroading time allotment Pre running or working on my Rock Crawling event planned for Feb 2008. Johnson Valley is where I go most of the time But Angie hates that place, so I go solo or with the Boy.

I was on the Rubicon last week and ran across a group (only one group, can you beleive it?) of TJ's. One of the guys had a bone stock Sahara with 1 inch coil spacer lift and 31" Goodyear MTR's. No gears, no lockers, no sliders, no winch, no nothing. He made it through with no mechanical or body damage and no assistance. According to him, keeping tire size down seems to keep the drivetrain intact. Being a decent driver and not getting crazy with the stupid pedal helps, too. This group was all from the Seattle area and most did not trailer their Jeeps to the trail. It is amazing what they can do in stock form.

Sounds pretty trick. Also sounds like there could be lots of wrenching.
We were also thinking of getting a TJ. After much research I want a 02 Grand Cherokee Overland. They have the 265hp 4.7HO, quadra drive, up country suspension. I can drag it behind the moho 4 down no prob, go off roading, and hitch up and tow the boat with it. All for about the same price as a used Wrangler.

When I was in my 20's, living near Vail, Colorado, working in mines and on cattle ranches, I had a 1954 stock Willy's Jeep pickup, I think with a "Hurricaine" six engine.

It would'nt go any faster or slower then 55 mph going up or down any highway in the Rockies....but out on the sheep and cattle ranches, it could power up any old trail in low range at about 1.5 mph and 3000 rpms with a 20' trailer full of cattle......nothing ever stopped that old truck....it was built like a tank.
I wish I still had it!

I too like others here have a Wrangler 99' Sport hardtop, Dana, etc.
If you want to stay cool in Havasu the hardtop is the ONLY way to do so. ALWAYS look for the Dana axle package never buy a 4 cylinder. The exhaust manifolds all crack but that is easily changed with an aftermarker stainless manifold for about $120. Mine is flawless for the past four years in Havasu. Mainly on road in town, small boat launching and in the hills during the cooler season.

In my opinion, it depends on what you are going to use it for! The YJs (87-95) are cheap and easy to modify if you are looking for a cheap wheeler.
The CJ7s are my personal favorite and are cheap and have some very strong drivetrain components. (dana 300 transfer case, stronger Dana 44 axles etc). And they mostly don't have all the emission BS and fuel injection to deal with. Very easy to work on!!!
If you're looking for a jeep that can be a daily driver, then get a 97 and up TJ.
Or, save yourself the problem and buy my CJ8 for sale! :D

Good luck.

Trouble Maker! :D :D :D
Very cool ride. One of these days I would like to restore one using a SBC for power.
By the way your new boat looks fantastic.

Thanks OC. Honestly I wouldn't pay what these things are going for, it was my father inlaws, now it's my sons. I would like to convert it, but it's a '76 with 60k original miles and runs like a champ. This will be our first season using it, I just finished replacing all the rubber, shocks, carb, tires, and doing all the basic maintenace to get it ready. My father in law bought an 06 Wrangler. (I think he should have kept this one;) ) The only left is the winch, he smoked the motor pulling three trucks out of a "dry" lake bed 20 years ago.

So who told you gearing is everything Tri County? I hear they are a rip off...
Nothing will ever equal HP and torque.....:D
