When I was young, my family would trade down when buying a new car - whatever I was driving was traded in, and I would inherit whatever my parents had been driving. Yes, this is a disclaimer, because I never would have bought:
1) 1974/5 Mustang II. Ford's answer to the first gas crisis. Merging on to I-280 @ Serramonte in this was breathtaking. Eventually, I broke the timing belt and bent a rod, leading to:
2) 1977 Chevy Monza. This thing ran slightly better than the Mustang, but it ate a set of front tires like every 10K miles.
My 1974 Super Beetle could drive circles around either one of these...

Got most of you beat! While a sophomore at BYU in Provo
Utah, the owner of the local Cadillac dealership (rhymes with Rick!) tells me about these great motors coming out
from GM called converted diesels! Bought a new 1983
Fleetwood Brougham De Elegante 4 door with a diesel.
Wouldn't go over 60 mph while pulling a 250R on a tiny
trailer. Couple years later put in a 350 gas motor and
life was good. Tailgaters got a face full of smoke on command!
Terrible mileage, the smoke problem, no acceleration
and it stunk but we looked good!

I had a '51 Studebaker pickup that looked a lot like this photo......:D :D
It had a 170 CI flattie six in it. Just to liven up the drive-in conversations, me and a buddy flared the back fenders with 3/4" EMT and some bondo, then bolted on a set of 10" M&H Racemaster slicks.........it was a bitch if you hit a water puddle on the street. :jawdrop:
As long as it was sittin' still, no one knew if I was lying about it having a BBC under the hood.....:D :D
I stripped the paint off with big plans for a custom job.....but decided the hell with it. About six months later a cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket for a broken tail light. He was filling out the citation, kinda stepped back and said "What color is this truck?"
Thought for a second and said "Uh, rust". :D :D

1975 Plymouth Valiant. Slant 6. Auto.
Not terrible on power, actually. It just wasn't real fast.
That car had two options. Power steering and an AM radio. The front bench seat was covered in the same rubber as the floormats. In poor light, you couldn't tell where the seat ended and the floor began.
In 40 below weather, my best friend used to tell me the seat was giving him piles. It wasn't comfortable, that much is certain.

1982 Chevy s10. It was a reliable turn-key driver but it couldn't get out of it's own way! '82 was the first year of the s10 and it came with a 1.9L Isuzu engine, same one as the old Chevy LUV, I believe.

I was given a 90 Suzuki Sidekick. It had a burnt valve but would still pass emissions @ 195K. Not only was it a very poor performer ( 5 speed stick  ) but it also enjoyed terrible mileage. The day the lights didn't turn on was the End of the road for that poor thing.. It was actually slower then the Mercury topaz 4 dr cpe with 2.0 efi and a 3 speed auto I still drive. I endearingly call it "The Turd" :D

This is a toss up between 1967 bug with missing rear floor pans (I always had a blanket on board in the winter) or a 1986 Mazda RX-7 that would smoke like spy hunter at any RPM over 3k. The bug had a piss ant motor but the mazda couldn't hit 50 to save it's life. I actually punch the front windshield out of the bug when it couldn't make it up a hill....that was the last time I drove that POS.

1980 Dodge D-50 truck. I spun a rod bearing playing Joe racer six months after my dad gave it to me for my 16th.
After that I put a 302 FORD with a C4 in it out of a mustang. Was the biggest hack job ever, but it would do one legger burnouts for days. Good thing for pick n pull I replaced 3rd members in that thing every six months.
