Yeah, she gives all these cars away to needy moms........ yet never mentions the fact that Chevrolet actually donated the cars. I know she does a lot for charity, but that just rubbed me the wrong way.

That's a lot of money and all, but if you took her income, net worth and compared it to the normal joe who donates, she probably contributed a smaller percentage.
This is what cracks me up about all the Hollywood actors who act like they give a shit when there is a disaster like Katrina, or when it comes to politics. But I have never seen them give up one of their six mansions, or really give until it hurts. Besides, if they were so concerned, they wouldn’t waste their time in the entertainment business.

I don't mean to disagree with you here Kilr, a million dollars to charity is alot of money no matter how much you have, and alot more then some celebrities. It's Oprah's donations to political campaigns, save in Tookie, and for me specifically her personal anti-gun campaigning that won't allow me to join you in her praises. (note: I don't know if she was on the save Tookie thing but it wouldn't surprise me)

She is a walking talking falsity. Tom Cruise, by the way, is gay. But she has him on her show for all this bullshit publicity because we all know if the midwest had even a slight clue that he was not the macho man he pretends to be, he would no longer be worth a dime in the box office. She's full of shit, hence the brown eyes she has.

I was reading the Forbes 400 list a couple days ago.
Oprah is now worth 1.4 Billion
If someone gives me 1.4 Billion right now I will donate 200 million without loosing a bit of sleep.
I think it's great that she gives but how much did she actually have to give so she could get the tax write off......

So I figured out the math and lets say she EARNED 1.4 billion, which she didn't according to Cole Trickles post, that is her net worth overall, so she made less than that, but for arguments sake, let's say she earned it. If she donated 100 million of that, that would be 7 percent of her income. How many can say you donated as much? If you made 100K, did you donate 7K? If you did, good for you.
I like her, I don't care what you guys think. I never watch her show anymore, but I like her.

When I imagine Oprah in any kind of pain or mental anguish, it makes me happy. Now you can use your imagination on what I mean when I say “happy”, but let me just say that rather than look at any kind of pornography, I would much rather look at photo chopped picture of a decapitated Winfrey, or “Oprah, the human flame” that burns to the ground like a phoenix, but the only thing that rises from the ashes is the wonderful scent of her dead lifeless corpse.

I will also add that a 100 million dollar tax write off will more than likely benefit her more than if she kept the money. I am poor compared to her but our financial guy always encourages some donations for tax purposes.

Just more self gratification. Companies donate(Advertise) to the Oprah show and she donates to the public, Who ownes the Oprah show, Oprah does. She gets the write off & the publicity. I am wondering how much of that she claims came out of her wallet.

Every Morman in the world donates 10% of their salary.
You missed the part where I said that was 7% of her net worth. Not 7 % of what she made, which is different from her net worth, probably considerably less.
And for all of you saying that she is getting a benefit from the write off, I don't think you understand how deductions work.
If I donate $1000, it comes off of my income, not my taxes owed. So I will save (a very rough estimate) $100 on my taxes. For those of you who can add, I am still out $900. It would only help if you donated enought to bring you down a whole tax bracket. Perhaps that is what she did.
Sorry, as a business owner, I get real irked when people say, "But it's a right off." That doesn't mean it doesn't cost you money. It doesn't mean it's nearly free. It just means you get a little bit of it back at the end of the year.
Sorry for the ramble.

Talking to my other 1/2 who is an accountant she said your statement is not really accurate. First of all there is no cap on charitable (sp) contributions and as fas as the percentage you get back, it depends on what bracket you are in. For some it is dollar for dollar, but in oprah's case it would not be because of her high income bracket. That being said, I am sure she uses a tax strategist (sp) that advises her on donations etc...to help her when it comes to write off's. I am sure this donation is a very small part of the picture.
I still can't back oprah though because of her very liberal and usually uninformed opinions. Take into account how money people (mostly women) she influences and I think she is just as bad if not worse than some of the activist actors. My.02

point taken
I just wanted to make the point that just because it's a "write off" doesn't mean you pay that same amount less in taxes, as some seem to believe.
I can certainly understand why some don't like her. I don't pay enough attention to have much of an opinion, but I'm not going to bad mouth anyone for giving any money to charity for any reason, even if it's a selfish one. The ends justify the means in this case.
