The arguments never quit when it comes to protecting your life and the life of the other members of the house, and now the car protection issue has been addressed, this thing is cool for about 500 bucks....
I was never a fan of Taurus, but they have come around very well lately.

I vote for Glock 20. 15+1 of 10mm goodness.
The 10mm is the only semi auto round that has enough punch to take down a large animal like a bear or deer.

Illegal to have in CA period.
I would think that you would really have to be doing something stupid for the cops to give you a hard time for that gun. It is only illegal in kommiforniastan. So, you are a law abiding citizen with this gun in 49 states, but as soon as you get into CA...you are a criminal?
I am sure the cops here dig this gun as much as anyone and see the home protection tool that really can be, and a safer one at that. I'd much rather have my neighbor taking a shot at an intruder with a short barrel shot gun because that shot ain't leaving his house like a .45 bullet could and then find its way into another house or my house.

There is a legal way to own one in Cali if you own property in AZ. You get an AZ DL at your address; buy all your non CA compliant hand guns. Import them into Cali. Leave all hi caps mags in AZ. Register them and get a Cali Lic. That is actually perfectly legal. But you must register them. A non registered hand gun in Cali is a Felony.
Have you guy’s heard about the micro stamping legislation on all new semi autos after 2010? Ya’ll better call Arnold.

You would have to be a resident in AZ that then a resident CA for that to work...if some one else did that you could buy them in a private party transfer, which would have to be thru a gun dealer.( just don't bring the high cap mags)
As long as its not expressly forbiden your fine. If its not on the approved DOJ list a dealer can not sell it. What ticks me off about the approved list is that even if a small change ( like diffrent sights or grib) is made to the gun that in no way effects the operation of the gun it has to go thru testing again. which cost ~ 10k per model.

Senate approves bill to 'microstamp' pistol cartridges
By DON THOMPSON
The Associated Press
SACRAMENTO
California would be the first state to require that every semiautomatic handgun cartridge be stamped with an identifying mark if the governor signs a bill that has now cleared both chambers of the Legislature.
The Senate approved the bill Thursday, sending it back to the Assembly for a final vote on amendments. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has not said whether he will sign the bill once it reaches his desk.
The measure would require that, starting in 2010, every semiautomatic handgun sold in California would have to automatically "microstamp" each bullet cartridge in two locations as it is fired. The microscopic stamping would identify the gun's make, model and serial number.
The bill would not affect revolvers, rifles or shotguns, but supporters say semiautomatics are the weapon used in a majority of homicides committed with firearms. Unlike revolvers, semiautomatics eject a cartridge each time they are fired, scattering evidence at a crime scene.
"This is something that would be helpful in identifying the gun that was used in the commission of a crime," said Sen. Jack Scott, D-Altadena, during Thursday's debate. "It's just giving law enforcement one more tool."
The measure cleared the Senate 21-17, with no votes to spare.
Opponents said the technology and the bill itself are dangerously flawed.
Criminals could collect cartridges from firing ranges and strew them at crime scenes, implicating innocent citizens, said Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth, R-Temecula. The firing pin that stamps the cartridge will either have to be so soft that it could be easily erased, or so brittle that it could break, he said.
Sen. Dave Cogdill, R-Modesto, argued that the bill will add "more cost and unnecessary harassment, quite frankly, of law-abiding citizens."
Similar legislation was introduced in Massachusetts and Rhode Island this year, according to the bill's author, Assemblyman Mike Feuer, D-Los Angeles. A federal bill, modeled on California's, is being considered by Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Los Angeles.

The Gun is chambered for 45 LONG COLT, not 45 ACP, big difference. Yes the ACP is slow, but it still has tremdous stopping power.
45 LONG is 1/3 again faster than the ACP (over 1400 fps on the LC compared to 950 on the ACP) with a 230 grain bullet with over 900 lbs of energy, that will penetrate very well.

I not planning on loading it with .45's there einstein....the whole point of this gun thread. And, I have a 12 ga, but it is a long barrel...good clay gun. I want a shorter barrel shot gun as well...say 19-20 inch...for just home protection. I think a 410 would be nice. If I have to get an intruder with the 45/410, I then pump an extra 410 in the intruder with the shotgun and lock the revolver up (with .45s in it of course).:D
I couldn't imagine that I would be standing, even with the 3rd leg acting like tripod, after shooting that revolver with 45 longs. I'd be doing back flips for days. :D

ETA: If I was you guys still living there, I'd be on the steps of the Capitol with picket signs. I'd also be pestering the hell out of the Governators' office, too.
Criminals always use guns they legally own to commite crimes
as far as what calibur penatrate walls, The load is more important then the calibur. Ball ammo( copper jacked) penatrate walls with easy, even 9MM can gon thru several layers of drywall and still kill. Modern def rounds tend not to do that. They use alot of thier energy to change the shape of the bullet on impact.
223 for example have a hard time going thru 2 layers of dry wall like you would see in a normal house. All shot gun ammo( other then slugs) are the same way. While bird shot is alot "safer" then buck, they are both extremly deadly inside a home.

I figured the 410 rounds would be good for snakes.
Did you watch the video? As RiverGiantKid said, I am a rookie. But, wouldn't that depend on the load and even the shot?

So, can someone buy a non-compliant gun in AZ, then register them in CA (after all the necessary time to make it "perfectly legal"), and then do a private sale in CA?
I've been told yes by an FFL. I lived in AZ from 1998-2001 and had to fill out the import new resident paperwork when I came back.

The thing about 410s is the pellets leave the barrel at the same speed as in a 12 ga. there is just less of them.
just to give you and idea of what 410 will do... look at some of these links
watch the last 30 seconds here and what it does to the target. (http://www.downrange.tv/player.htm?bcpid=452320104&bclid=459256134&bctid=1119219330)

Ok, I saw the Video. Cool gun. Still would be cool for snakes when on a hike. It sure would make a hell of a mess of a car jacker.
I think I might make it my first wheel gun. I can't wait to walk in, pay for my new toy and walk out with it.

Sweet gun. Ever wonder just how many handguns are in the channel on a holiday weekend, in the boats of all those drunken wannabe gangsters? I do...

HM, I'd look at a 20 or 12 around the house. A .410 would put a hurt on someone no doubt, but look down the barrel of a 12 and then a .410...the imagination works a lot harder with a big assed hole staring at you.
A double barrel coach gun would do nicely:D
Yea and swing that shotgoun around when your in bed, the pistol looks alot more appealing, no comparision between the two. A 3" 410 with number 2 is gonna stop ANYONE in there tracks, if not on the first shot the fifth one will do the job...

This thing loaded with some number 71/2 shot in a 410 would be the perfect snake gun, no doubt.
And it would also work well on Owls at night if you get hungry!!:D

I already have a nice 12 ga long barrel that is great for recreational purposes. But, I am looking at guns purely for home defense. I will end up getting another 12 ga for home defense as well. But that 45/410 is really a great combination. I like having several lines of defense. :D

And, you could have a couple of 45's chambered waiting in the Q on the off chance that someone is only wounded. Like shown in that video Yellowboat linked.

Also...in that video YellowBoat posted...they are coming out with a Magnum series that will hold a couple more rounds since this one only holds 5.

Hell with the right combo of ammo five should be plenty, it kinda reminds me of the bad guy in the south that drew down of the cops, and about 6 or 8 cops unloaded on him, the media asked the chief why did you shoot a hundred and fifty rounds at this poor subject, the chief paused, and said "because we ran out of ammo"..a classic, outta snopes that one.:D

Holy, if you want a decent home defense handgun that'll outlast you, your heirs, and their kids as well, you can't go wrong with a 4" barrel Ruger GP 100 .357 Mag. I don't own one ( I have 2 other .357, 3 .38's) but I do have a Super Redhawk. Ruger makes an indestructable platform that reasonably priced and American made. You can even load a .357 with CCI shot capsules and get a "shotgun" for rattlers.
If you're dead set on a short barrel gun thats light for packing but large-bore, look at the Taurus titanium .44 Mag. About 28 oz, 2.5 in barrel etc. so backpacking is easy, and with 3 .44 specials and 3 CCI .44 shot capsules it'll serve double duty. Plus it's legal to buy in Ca. DON'T buy magnums, after about 3 shots and you're never gonna want to use the damn thing again.
As a guy who's been shooting small bore/gauge shotguns since he was 8 (32 years and counting) and who uses a .28 ga for trap and birds, I can honestly the .410 ain't much punkins. From the 3" barrel birdshot's almost useless over 6 feet. There is a 2.5" 000 buckshot load (3 pellets) that has promise, and if using this as home defense I'd load them. Honestly because the idea is to immediately stop the bad guy before he hurts you, not piss him off with a bunch of pepper shot. The .45 Colt is a good round, and has been since about 1873, it'll stop a crook no probs.
Besides carrying a gun at work for the last 17 years, and seeing a LOT of folks who were hurt/killed by handguns, I also currently own and handload for .45 Colt (2 HG 1 rifle) and .45 ACP (1 HG) and .45 Super (1 HG) and .44 mag/.44 Spl (2 hg 1 rifle) and .454 Casull (1 HG) and .357 mag/.38 Spl (5 HG 1 rifle) and 9mm (3 HG) and .40 (1 HG), .380 ACP (2 HG) along with a smattering of .22 LR/.22 Mags, so I have some (not a lot,) of experience with most popular defense handgun calibers...:)

I like my Para warthog 45 with snake rounds in the car and the 870 for home.
You still can not match the reliability of a wheel gun, goes bang every time.
