He is late with my imported goods.
How we get all our stuff from China. Get a load of this ship - 15,000 containers and a 207' beam! Look at the 13 crew size for a ship longer than a US aircraft carrier that has a complement of 5,000 men and officers. That 207' beam means it was NOT designed for the Panama or Suez Canal, it's strictly transpacific. The cruise speed, 31 knots means the goods arrive 4 days before the typical container ship (18-20 knots) on a China-California run. So this behemoth is hugely competitive carrying perishable goods. This ship was built in sections, the sections floated together and then welded. The command bridge is higher than a 10-story building and has 11 crane rigs that can operate simultaneously.
Emma Maersk:
Country of origin - Denmark
Length - 1,302 ft
Width - 207 ft
Net cargo - 123,200 tons
Engine - 14 in-line cylinders diesel engine (110,000 BHP) Cruise Speed - 31 knots
Cargo capacity - 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 20 ft container)
Crew - 13 people
First Trip - Sep 8, 2006
Construction cost - $145,000,000
Silicone painting applied to the ship bottom reduces water resistance and saves 317,000 gallons of diesel per year.

Before sinking the ship or lynching the crew, don't forget that it could just as easily carry containers of American goods FROM here to other countries. Not saying that it does, but it certainly could -- we do export some stuff you know. :)

My father has worked on container ships for over 35 years. These type of ships have cut alot of jobs out of the industry. He's been on large "panamax" ships in Alaska during storms. The good news is that these ships are a lot safer then the older models that are still around. If taxes and the costs to do business was not so high in the United States, you'd see more ships flying the American flag - very few do anymore. The "containerization" of the industry has taken it's toll.
He says that they don't seem that big when you're caught in a storm taking waves port to starboard that are breaking over the wheel house and washing containers off the deck.

you might not think this is true but one of the main exports out of LA/LB harbor is trash/garbage and scrap metals to go to another country make something and we buy it.what a shame
