Hey everyone, new to the forum and hope to find some good tips and info on here.
I have a 20' runabout, 5.7 motor, Capt's Call exhaust. It has the standard radio setup..in dash (behind waterproof cover) CD player, 15-25 watts/channel with 2 speakers.
I'd like to upgrade everything. I'd like to replace the head unit with another Cd/AM/FM unit, the speakers I'd like to upgrade the 6" front ones to 6.5 round, and then add some 6.5 rounds to the bottom area under the rear bench seat.
I'd also like to add a 4 channel amp- possibly in the 60-100 watts/channel (clean) area. Not looking to impress the people across the Lake, but just have a nice, jammin system we can listen to while cruising along, or just sitting.
As far as budget, I don't want to get crazy, but 400-600 bucks would be fine.
Any ideas or suggestions?
On top of this..where do you normally mount an amp? In the engine compartment?

Due to heat and humidity, and the real good chance of getting wet, I'd put the m either behind a side panel toward the helm, in the cuddy(if you have one), or under the dash at the helm or dassenger's dash...

No one has any recommendations on amp, unit, or speakers?
Wow.
I figured there'd be a popular choice on a brand from some of you guys.

Very hard to suggest worthy upgrades on the budget you provided.
200 bucks for a head unit, 200 bucks for an amp, and 200 bucks for speakers?
I can get Sony, Clarion, Alpine on Ebay to name a few within those numbers, and Ebay isn't the cheapest around.
Its cool. Thanks anyways.

Hey TP, for what you want to do im thinking this stuff would work good and be within your budget. Mabye someone else will have some input on this stuff as well.
Amp (http://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-Profile-AP1040-1000W-4-Channel-Amplifier_W0QQitemZ5870401894QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1 QQcmdZViewItem)
HU (http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Sony-CDX-F5710-CD-MP3-AM-FM-Player-with-Remote_W0QQitemZ5868725133QQcategoryZ39753QQrdZ1QQ cmdZViewItem)
Wired Remote (http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-RM-XM10-WIRED-MARINE-REMOTE-CONTROL-NEW-CDX-F50M_W0QQitemZ5872477814QQcategoryZ94853QQssPageNa meZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
Speakers (http://cgi.ebay.com/POLK-AUDIO-DB650-COAXIAL-6-5-SPEAKERS-2-WAY-DB-650-NEW_W0QQitemZ5872288743QQcategoryZ18799QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
Then add some good wire and cable, you've got a decent system on a budget. If you need a marine HU than you could get one for around the same price range on ebay. Some may recomend a pioneer deck witch is fine but the sony will allow you to use two wired remotes if you want. Theres lots of choices for decent 6.5 speakers, ive heard the pioneers are pretty good as well as the kicker KS60's for about the same price as the Polks. Im no expert by any stretch but just giving some ideas on whats out there on your budget.

Thanks, ROZ...I can go a little bit more on the amp if needed.
I'm think 60-80 Watts per channel is PLENTY.

Thanks for taking the time and effort, BK. Nice finds.
I'm thinking along the lines of a Pioneer Deck and Pioneer speakers...but I'm really open to whatever sounds the best for the dollar. I mean, this isn't a accoustical haven...its a boat.

Anyone?
Is the Sony HU the only one you can use 2 wired remotes with? I thought I read you can do it with Pioneer also.

I thinkn you can add an aditional remote to Clarion as well. Clarion will allow an additional LCD remote.
Pioneer will only allow you to daisychain a non lcd readout remote...

I just got this put in a Alpine CDA-9831 with a Clarion amp ( 400 watts ) with 4 -6x9's and 2 -10" Jensons - 350 watts ( this is in a Bronco ) it is all sealed up stuff..when the top comes off, it will still work even when it rains! I tried to make a video, but my camera microphone just can't take it.......( . )( . )........Next for me is 2-12" IMPP Pioneers with a 800 watt for the back :p ( that other stuff is in the back seat area ) Its a 2 seater with pounding shit happening........... It makes the back window shake like crazy right now :crossx: crap is vibrating so hard , I think it is going to go south soon

Whats the consensus on the HU?
I see a bunch of the Fountain/Hi-Po guys throwing the Clarion name around, but that could be just because its a marine unit.
Alpine? Pioneer? Rock-Fosgate? Any loyalties?

I have a Sony. They are simple and the wired remotes are easy to set up on them not like the Pioneers. The Pioneer deck is nice with a lot of features, but once you turn off your batteries you lose all your dialed in settings.

Hey Matt, which model Sony did you go with? I've always ran Kenwood stuff and I have had some bad luck with the last couple headunits I have bought. I was thinking of going Sony now and want something super simple but has the MP3 hookups and the remote options.

I'm very partial to Alpine head units, always had good luck with them. I've had a couple of Sonys go belly up. I refuse to put a high $$$ unit in a boat since they get the sh!t beat out of them and tend to get wet occasionally... in other words they get replaced once in a while. Mine's a lower end unit around 200 bucks, model 9825 if memory serves, and sounds terrific. For amps I really like the Hifonics Zeuss series stuff that I'm running now. They sound good, run cool, have lots of features and don't cost an arm or a leg. I think I paid around 300 bucks a piece for the mono sub amp and the 4 channel full range. The 4 channel is running at 2 ohms and doesn't get too hot. That's a good thing since I have them mounted behind a panel where they don't get much circulation. Speakers are your call, listen to lots of different brands and find one you like. Separates are nice because they sound good and don't fall apart like some multi-driver ones that are mounted in one piece. I happened to run across some separates from PHD that sounded decent and were an irresistable deal at 45 bucks a pair... thanks again to Magic34!

I have the cdx-7715x.
I plug my mp3 player into the aux jack in the back. I don't control it with the HU.

I have a Clarion marine head unit in my boat with 2 wired LCD read out remotes. I've been real happy with it so far.

The model I have is a couple years old. It is the M335. I think the M455 replaced it. I have the older style wired remotes also. I like the looks of the new remotes better than mine.
