Are you planning on camping or hoteling it? It makes a difference. If you camp stay on the beach, but watch the tides. Hotel, let me get back to you in the morning on that one.

I'm not havasubum but we are going also in October and are beaching it. We don't have a 4x4 but we have a 2500 HD diesel. Do you think we would make it anywhere in Pismo?

my friends family owns the pink house by the pier. we went there a couple years ago. maybe i was just too used to glamis but for the riding factor, i didn't like it. it is very small. its cool being next to the ocean though. some people had seadoos with them along with their quads. it definately wasn't worth towing everything out there from phoenix. would i do it again...no. i did have fun at the bars though. i don't remember what it was called but it was very crowded.

If you camp on the beach, drive as farth south as you can and find your spot.
October is a good month, you'll enjoy it for sure.
I don't think there are any hotels that you can ride your toys from to the beach/OHV area, so you'll have to trailer back and forth.

My thoughts too. After being a Glamis kid, pismo sucks. Riding area is small and so are the dunes. Its cool being near the beach but focks up all your stuff. One weekend out and the sandcar was covered in rust from the salt air. I don't think I'll ever go back. For a little bit farther of a drive, Glamis has a lot more to offer. JMO:idea:

Sounds like your question was answered. Just air down and you'll be fine.

You have to trailer to the dunes. Lots of stuff to do at the resort too. Great family place.

I second you on the salt air. Also everyone packs the beach and when the tide comes up and you are trying to leave salt water everywhere. Leaving on Sunday high tide was our biggest mistake. I am still cleaning stuff up a month later. Brought my standup ski there (no wetsuit) - big mistake the water is a lot colder than in OC and SD. The pictures of the sand with the ocean background was pretty cool though.

People talk shiat, It is small, it is salty, But go to glamis this time of year and you will have a lot more to complain about. No you will just have one thing to complain about... it's HOTTTTTTTTT. I go to pismo once a year in august and it's a nice break from boating and to tide over the sand addiction. You can ride around in a t-shirt and it's nice and cool, different more laid back atmosphere than glamis, and it breaks up the summer. Go and you will love it... be carefull camping as most people set up in the afternoon and then when the tide comes in they are sinking. Also it is a BITCHEN drive up the coast all the way there... I have some better coastal pics on another comp, I will try to get em up later.

That about sizes it up pretty good.
If the creek is flowing, ya cross it at 2 hours after high tide, and as close to the ocean as possible.
Air down before you enter the beach.
The tides are on time, just the distance the water travels up the beach can be un-predictable. Especially in Oct.
All kinds of good camping grounds along the rr tracks if ya dont want to camp on the beach.
Dumont season opens in late October, ya might wanna consider it too.
Time was Pismo was Glamis in Summer, but the extreme enviros have had their way in court and the closeures have really effected the quality of fun.
They're starting to turn their attention toward the boating world now.
Lake Powell is next to go.

Pismo is fun. It is no Glamis but still a great place to camp on the beach and ride some dunes. We use to stay at a great place www.pacificplazaresort.com it is right at the entrance to to beach. However you cannot ride your Atv's, sandrails etc. from there to the dunes you must trailer them. Nice, big resonable rooms. We now have a WW so we camp on the beach. I think it is alot more fun to camp on the beach and the kids would agree. As for getting stuck it will proably happen but there are plenty of people to help pull you out. Just park or camp where all the other rv's and trailers are. As for the salt air messing up your stuff, I went to Pep Boys and bought a large car cover to cover my Atv's at night. If I had a high dollar sandcar I don't think I would take it to Pismo but plenty of people do.

Bring a ca of WD40 with you and spay down all your toys prior to getting there. We have a house in Pismo beach and riding the dunes is nice, like others have said is no glamis, but you also dont deal with all the crazies that glamis has to offer.

I went last month, as mentioned IT'S NOT GLAMIS!
It was fun and my family agreed to do it again during the hot HAVASU season.
Find out when low tide is and try to go in and out at that time. WD40 every thing that looks like it will Rust. When you get to the beach "PULL OVER TO THE SIDE SO YOU ARE NOT BLOCKING ANYBODY TRYING TO GET BY" then AIR DOWN.
15lbs on the truck and 20lbs on the trailer then go any where you want.
Take a tarp to cover your toys at night.
Take some warm clothing just in case.
Sit back and enjoy its alot of work getting there,
But we were so RELAXED the second day it was worth it!

October is a great time to ride Pismo. The plover fences are removed, opening more riding area, and the weather is often better than in the summer (less fog). You may want to make reservations, even if you are planning to camp on the beach. It is not uncommon for the weekends to sell out for camping from spring through fall.
If you are worried about getting stuck, you can always call Steve's Towing and arrange an escort ahead of time. The creek shouldn't be an issue in October.

I've been to Pismo too many times to count and i think as i get older i've found the perfect mix of riding, beach, sand and a place to stay. We don't bring the big trailer just the small one with the toys. Get a hotel room at one of the smaller hotels close to the entrance closest to the dunes. We spend the whole day with the ladies, kids and toys on the beach riding playing etc...
Then we go back to the hotel clean up eat dinner and then whoever wants to go back on the beach and have a camp fire can go or it they can stay back at the hotel and go into town or watch a movie with the kids. Me and my buddy and sometimes a few of the kids will go back at night for the campfire and hanging out on the beach. It's nice to have the hotel to go back too and it's nice not to drag the big trailer down on the beach and possibly get stuck and etc....
Just time the tides for the river crossing and you'll be fine.

We are also going out to Pismo in October. I believe the weekend of the 13th. Its a fun place. If all you plan on doing is riding, you will get bored. However, if you are going to explore around they have some great restaurants (cracked crab is great!) Plus you have stuff within an hour or so to do. We have been up to Hearst Castle several times and Monterey several times while camping in Pismo. You will need to make reservations, as they typically will sell out until Glamis season is in full swing. Just a hint for you, go into the 2nd gate, it sucks to have to drive down the beach at 15mph, and the first gate is a ways down there. Once you get off at Grand, go over the tracks and turn Left, then turn right at the mexican restaurant.
If you arent pulling anything then you can make it through no problem with airing down to about 8-10 lbs. If you are towing something, you probably will get stuck trying to pull out. My f250 was 2x4 and I would pull a 21ft trailer. Made it in, but had to get towed out.

I have been there 3 times this summer. Great place to go if you are local. Weather is nice. Not a huge riding area, but it's fun. WD40 works great. Once you are done riding buy some salt away and wash everything down. I suggest at least rear paddles. As it was mentioned in an earlier post, air down to 15 lbs on the truck and 20 lbs on the trailer. With 4x2 you may have to air down to 10 lbs. You can drive on the beach (hard packed sand) and don't need to air down until you are ready to venture in the soft sand. Auto tire deflators are helpful but not necessary. It can take a while to air down all the tires if you do it with just the tire guage. If you don't air down you will get stuck, even with a 4x4. It will be a lot more work to get out. First time we went, we aired down my buddies 2500 diesel 4x4 and 28 ft yoy hauler to 25 lbs. We buried it! If you have a 4x2 truck lifted, you should be fine with 15 lbs. If you have stock tires on, you might get stuck. Bring a tow rope and tire guage. If you have power (Generator) then bring an air compressor if you have one. You can also get air in town. Read the tide before you go. This way you will know when high tide is, so you can avoid arriving at high tide. Dogs are allowed on the beach with a leash. If you bring your own firewood, make sure it is clean wood with no nails etc. Most of all have fun and be safe.
This site has a lot of helpful information. It also has the tide schedule. They will come out and give you ice, water, firewood, dump your sh!tter. http://www.yobananaboy.com

I like the Pismo Coast Village RV resort, really nice place for the RV. Walking distance to town for eats or sippy-sippy's. Easy drive to the dunes for the toys...I love Pismo and that whole area of the central coast...lots of good wine too!;)

Paddles aren't necessary. You'll accelarate better w/ them, but you can still climb the dunes w/out. 5 lbs in rear and 4 up front and you'll be fine.
