I give up!!!!! Have twin omc V-8's powering my 29 foot Blackfin (12000#). Every weekend something new, this past lower unit problem. I have no confidence in these motors and need to replace them. What should I do? Merc 300x, Yamaha 250 Saltwaters? I am looking for your advice for reliabilty. I run off of the NJ coast.
Thanks
Chip

Personally i would go with 250 saltwater yamahas, not the 4-strokes they are good motors and you will save 1/3 the fuel but they are $17000 a piece the 250's i have seen have been run in the toughest conditions and we cant kill them they are excelent engines, i would also recomend the 3000x but im not a big merc fan .

Snapper,
Would the 250's have the same snot that the 275 omc have, the boat weighs 12000lbs. Right now I top out at about 45 mph at 5600 rpm's. I also heard that the merc's don't like low idle when trolling, any thoughts.
Thanks

Chip,
Just saw your post. Here are my thoughts. I have owned several V-8's and just sold my 28 Tiara with 2 250's on it. Nothing will replace the torque of the 8's, so the next choice is the engines with the largest displacement. Yams seem to do a good job and have the longest warranties available. I have always been partial to Mercs, since I have been racing boats since the early 70's, but I have hot rodded them all except Yams. Remember, you are pushing a really heavy boat and parts are going to break. So my advice is go with the most reliable engine and let economy fall into place where you can live with.
Also, what year are you 8's. I may be interested in them when you repower.
