Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree - Tony Orlando & Dawn
because my opinion on that one song has not faltered since 1972 ... no matter nobody else agrees with me it's stood the test of my lifetime so far.

I've got to agree with CBADDAD about American Pie and I
also like the bob seger roll me away song. Stairway to
Heaven ranks up there and then there's You've lost that
loving feeling by the Righteous Brothers. All great music.

This one, The City of New Orleans..done here by the Highwaymen...speaks to a long gone time, when people had time to get to know one another as they traveled....if you ever have the time, and don't have to be there overnight, try the train...you might like it.....

im going to step out and show my age once again.
(Ghost) Riders In The Sky
Peak Billboard position # 1 in 1949
Monroe may not have sung it precisely this way but a recording by him was not
available so the words and music herein are taken from the sheet music as written
by Stan Jones
Monroes' version, as well as competing versions by Peggy Lee (# 2), Bing Crosby
(#14), and Burl Ives (# 21) were all charted as just "Riders In the Sky"
Later, The Ramrods took it to # 30 in 1961 with the parenthetical (Ghost) added,
as did the Baja Marimba Band (#52 in 1966) and The Outlaws (#31 in 1981)
Lawrence Welk used the original title on his # 87 in 1961.
I like The Outlaws version the best.
An old cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw
A'plowin' through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw.
Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel
Their horns wuz black and shiny and their hot breaths he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the riders comin' hard and he heard their mournful cry
Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, and shirts all soaked with sweat
They're ridin' hard to catch that herd but they ain't caught them yet
They've got to ride forever in that range up in the sky
On horses snortin' fire, as they ride on, hear their cry
Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name
"If you want to save your soul from hell a' ridin' on our range"
"Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride"
"A-tryin' to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies."
Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky

There are so many timeless classics It's hard to narrow it down to just one song.
Aside of all the great Classics the one I have been obsessed with lately is.
♪♫♪♪♫♪ Richard Ashcroft ~ Check The Meaning.♪♫♪♪♫♪
From the Human Condition Album. and only the album version. Most of the youtube hits cut the song short by 2 verses and it's the last two that really bring it home.
Last Verse.....
It's a beautiful world
And when the city sleeps we go walking
We find a hole in the sky and then we start talking
And then we say "Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ
Buy us some time, buy us some time"
Can you Hear what I'm saying?

Some of you are starting to show a little on the age of the songs you chose. Overall I like the majority. I am a little suprised at the country that showed up.
My heros have always been cowboys
Willie Nelson
To many to list by the Highway Men.
Most of the "good stuff" comes from when country was country and not pop.
On the other hand anything off Appetite for Destruction is hard to beat.

While looking through these songs, your can definitely tell what era they grew up. When it comes to music, most people stop expanding their musical knowledge and interest at age 25. What they grew up with, peer influence, and lifestyle at the time is what they call favorite or best. Its usually musicians and those in the music industry that continue to adapt, expand and evolve as the music evolves. Some of the songs listed, I consider pure crap. It was little more than a bunch of guys holding an instrument, making nothing more than noise. Yes, it can be called music, but throwing a box full of utensils down the street can be considered music too. I will take a moment to bag on the Beatles though. Talk about over rated!!! They were nothing more than a bar band with bad haircuts that got lucky. The Brits weren't even stupid enough to buy into their crap. They came over here, and as Americans, we made them popular to say the least.

This is suppose to be a thread about the best song ever. Not a, "What is your favorite song" Thread. When I started it, I was messing around on here and had an internet radio staion playing in the backgrong when American Pie came on. Definately before my time and I was thinking, damn this is a classic and possibly the best song ever.
I realize that it this is subjective. That is what is what makes the world so bitchen...and Hot Boat so fockin' insane!!!
