Anybody own one? I think it would be cool but it might get a little big for the pool....and shit!
What do you think?

Chain that bitch up with about 40' and throw it in the river. Just throw your leftover salad each night to it for food.

Great idea! We're looking at importing 2 water buffalo and pack of Hynea! I'm thinking of buying some kaki shorts and learning how to say "Krikey" !!

Thats a lot of salad throwing that would be needed. For some reason the "throwing" of salad bothers me....lol

We could meet up and let the pets have a "play" day together. That would be interesting. F it...I think I am going to do it. This could be a lot of fun

They just probably got a bad hippo. Some are brought up in an aggresive manner and don't know how to "share" their watering holes. Mine would be provided by only a respected breeder.
I am a little concerned that the hippo might not share the pool well with others though. I think if we have it around others in the pool from a young age it won't attack.
Maybe giving the hippo a name like "Hippity Hop" will help give it a fun and harmless disposition.

It all depends on how you raise them.

That is why I started this thread.
I need ideas on how to bring him up so I have the best chance at having a nice hippo that is fun to be around for guests and my grandsons.

It's the strangest thing I ever saw. They married a Fox and it turned into a Hippo.

Note to all. Don't search for pics of "salad tosser" on Google images at work.

I can't wait to drive around town with my hippo in the bed of the truck. That chain is going to be expensive for the tie down. It is worth it though as I don't need to be chasing my hippo all over town if he were to jump out.

Just make sure it understands that you're the lead hippo. You gotta be the Alpha hippo, or it might come after you. :D
Just cause it has the size and ability to kill or mame you, no reason not to let your kids/grandkids play with it. Heck, it'd probably love to sleep in your bed at night. Think of the quality bonding. Pay no attention to any reports of attacts. Yours is going to be different. :D :D

My hippo will be a model hippo. After I have a few beat down sessions with it. It will respect me and my guests. I really think I can handle this well.
I think if you show the hippo you care for him and only want the best for all hippos in general the savage tendencies will not be there.
Jusy my opinion though. Others may not feel the same way but DILLIGAF!
I also plan on introducing the grandkids to him at the earliest time I can. That way the hippo will love babies and little kids just like their own.

Can you imagine how fun it will be to cruise along in the boat with my hippo? I know the hippo will slow my boat down a bit but he will love to hang out all day in the coves with me.
The only thing that worries me is getting him back into the boat when it is time to go. Maybe I could go with one of those doggie ramps and reinforce it a bit. Think that will work?

If my hippo would allow that I don't have a problem with it but monkeys are mean little fockers. If he throws shit on my hippo I am sure all hell is going to break out.

The breeder says my hippo is going to be very athletic. I just assumed that meant he could jump. If that is true then it solves the problem with my hippo jumping up on the guests.

Just got a call from the breeder. I have my choice of these hippos. I am leaning towards the underwater one as I really don't have time to teach my hippo how to swim. Plus I think I can fit my grandsons diaper on him. Ironically his name is Hippity Hop. Seems he is ready to go:

That is one potential problem that we face. Since it will be my hippo and not someone elses hippo I think I can deal with it. If it was someone elses' hippo doing that it would gross me out.

At a minimum he will know how to roll over, sit up, beg. You know all the basics that every hippo should know. I just hope he doesn't roll right thru the wall into the living room though.
I can see this as my new business opportunity I have been looking at. We could probably tour the US while making a little money where we go. I just have no desire to have a "star" as a pet hippo. He would probably start throwing hissy fits and I can't deal with that.

Well, I am off to Petco to see what kind of Hippo food they have. I also want to check out some chains and leashes. I think he will look cool with one of those studded collars. Also have to ask the staff there if I can bring him in for his shots and so forth. I want my hippo to be as healthy as possible.

I would look into renting or at the worst leasing before I went ahead and purhased.
Or, with the hippo market being what it is, check the Hippotrader and see what is available.

Already looked into all of that. In the long run it is cheaper to purchase your hippo. Plus if the hippo finds out he is on a lease it could cause him to go on a rampage or become depressed. Don't need that happen'
The Hippotrader had lots of hippos but nothing caught my eye. I am looking for a baby hippo that I can have some influence on and so forth. To be honest most of the hippos in the trader looked worn out.....

Find a really really really fat chick, who already has her own hippo costume, and pay her in gift cards to Hometown Buffett. So then your only out $10-$15 at most :D

tom,
have you looked into cross breeding your hippo with somethign smaller, say a mini pig. that should keep size down and rid yourself of many of the problems associtated with owning a Hippo.

Byron does bring up a good point with this picture. You should look into optional hippo insurance with some type of medical and dental plan. I mean, come on, look at those teeth... Do you want your hippo to have some crackhead looking teeth or would you rather see nice straight white hippo teeth when he smiles???

One bit of advice. Having a hippo as a pet is okay, but be very carefull not to fall in love with it. Hippos don't make good wives.

My girl and I are having a disagreement over which Hippo to get. She wants the female hippo but I prefer the male hippo. I am afraid that the female may get out at some point, roam the "hood" and next thing you know....BAM! she is pregnant. I can't deal with a bunch of little hippos running around. Male hippos are much more balanced mentally and easier to train. At least that is what I have been told.
Does anybody know what way I should go here? I just want to make sure I get the right hippo for our situation. It would suck to make a mistake and have to turn the hippo in to the Hipporescue foundation: www.hipporescue.com

I totally agree with that one. For Halloween we may dress up our hippo but will be sure to be sensitive about this kind of stuff. The only thing worse than a moody hippo is a confused hippo. I think we will dress our hippo up as a big pumpkin or possibly a pirate.

But don't you think dressing up a hippo in any type of human fashion will only confuse it? What about having them wear something from their natural surroundings like a lion or a monkey? They might think it's fun to poke a little fun at their old friends like "Look at me I'm a rhino".
